gtd apps

There’s a lot of information out there.. I mean a LOT of information. A study performed by two economists (Hal Varian and Peter Lyman) from UC Berkeley, and reported on in 2003, calculated the rate of growth at 30% year on year. And that was 6 years ago!

Whether you’re researching topics of interest for work or study, or just for personal edification, there is always going to be a time when you find an article of interest that you just don’t have time to read properly. But you want to tag it for reading at a later time. Leveraging “Remember The Milk“, my favourite GTD app, and the new Google Reader “Send To” features, you can set yourself a little reminder to come back and read the articles. The steps are pretty simple.

1) Log in to Google Reader

2) Click on the “Settings link in the top right-hand corner, and then click on “Send To“.

3) Click on the “Create a custom link” button.

4) Enter a short name for the Send-To in the Name field- I chose RTM, pick whatever works for you.

5) Enter the following URL into the URL field – http://m.rememberthemilk.com/add?name=${title}&url=${url}&due=2 weeks&priority=3&repeat=0&estimate=5 minutes&tags=research – This should all be one line. I’ll explain all the field names a bit later, and how you can customise it to your liking.

6) Enter the following URL into the Icon URL field – http://www.rememberthemilk.com/img/gears/desktop_128×128.png

7) Click on the Save button, and voila! You now have a Send To that works straight into Remember The Milk!

Now, there is one little caveat, and it is this: You MUST have logged into the mobile-friendly version of Remember The Milk, otherwise the Send To link gets munted in the process.

As promised, let us break down the URL for you so that you can customise the Send To link to work better for you.

http://m.rememberthemilk.com/add - Leave this alone – this is the program that adds the reminder into Remember The Milk

?name=${title} – Google Reader supplies the Title of the blog article in this variable ${title} – best not to touch this.

&url=${url} - Google Reader supplies the URL of the blog article in this variable ${url} – best not to touch this.

&due=2 weeks – Remember The Milk is really clever, and can understand most combinations of human readable dates. I choose “2 weeks” because anything older than that is probably “old news”

&priority=3 – I picked Priority 3 as its the lowest. If you change this to 4, you will get No Priority assigned to the task.

&repeat=0 – I don’t want to keep reading the same article over and over, so I set repeat to 0. If you’re more interested in the comments on the article, you may want to change this to 1 or higher.

&estimate=5 minutes - How long do I reckon I need to read/digest this. I set this to 5 minutes because I like to think of ways to apply the content of the blog, or someone I know who may find it useful.

&tags=research – This tag just categorises the Send To, and allows you to group the work you’re going to have to do to catch up on all that new juicy information. Enjoy! Now you have no reason to miss that great article about Widget Creation that you found!

time management mind

Stress and tension reducing time management strategy. Your mind is like a computer capturing and storing data all day long every day. When you choose to store unnecessary data in your mind you’re just increasing your stress and tension. With the fast paced world around you, and all the demands you have each day give yourself and your mind a break.

Use a system outside of your head to capture all the important things. Each day you have things you have to do now, things you can do later, things you can do some day when you have time, and things you want to remember to do at some point and you don’t have any idea when that point will be right now. So much information. So many thoughts and ideas. It’s no wonder you’re exhausted and have a tension headache by the end of the day. You can take a gigantic burden off your mind if you’ll just allow an external system to track all this stuff for you.

Don’t read the word system and think big and complicated and hard to learn. That’s exactly what you don’t want. You want something simple, that you developed, and that you understand, and that you’ll be willing to use daily. The whole objective of your system is to have a place where you can logically store all this information outside of your head. Thus freeing your mind up from having to track and remember all these really insignificant things in the big picture of life. You especially want to rely on an external system if what you’re tracking is really big picture important.

What system should you use with this time management strategy? Start with something you’re very comfortable with, and something you can rely on no matter what. Electronic systems are great, but when your hard drive crashes, your data is corrupted, or you have a virus how will you retrieve this information. Use one main system to manage your time, and only one main system. It’s okay to have other systems that trigger reminders, but you want one system that you can count on to have all the information you need.

How do you organize all this time related information? Everything that is this week should go right into your calendar. That’s the easy stuff. You also need one central location where you put all your “not now stuff”, all the stuff you want to or have to do later and you don’t want to forget. When you’re developing your system you also want to think about being able to access your information easily wherever you are, so you can add things and check things off and verify that you have the information recorded.

time management

However, to adopt effective time management habits there are some things you should be doing. To begin with, you will need to use time management tools. It does not matter if you are using a paper-based to-do list system, a day timer or a complicated software program.

Step #1 – Physically managing your time

The first step to physically managing your time is to know where the time is going. You can plan how you are going to spend your time in the future because work will be done earlier. There are many different ways to set this up quickly.

What are the useful tips for effective time management

It does not matter how you keep track of everything. Just make sure you figure out some way to physically manage your time. This way you know how you are going to spend your time. You should make sure you prioritize with these tasks.

Put all of the projects you have to have done on the top of the list. The things that can wait can go on the bottom of the list. Make sure you know out of all your tasks which ones you have to accomplish. Then set the goal to how far you have to get on the list for each day.

What to do if running a single person business entity?

If your business is a one-man show, change things and hire someone to take over some of the workload for you. You should always have at least one other person to take over some of the workload and make things easier for you. Most probably you can offload a lot of the repetitive, dull work of managing the daily routine of a business to other people – that way you can schedule your time in other forms for other projects.

Good, effective time management can help you to get the most out of your business. If you do combine with someone to help with the load, make sure they understand you make all the rules and schedules (that is, don’t turn over the business to them).

With proper and effective time management, you need to establish a routine and stick to it as much as you possibly can. While things will happen to get in your way, you’ll be more productive if you can follow the routine most of the time.

This way people get to know what your time frames are and this makes it easier for them to help you do what you need to get done. Another part of making sure that you actually get things done is to get in the habit of setting (and meeting) time limits for the tasks needing to be completed.

How to eliminate activities that waste time?

Reading and answering e-mail can consume a big portion of your day. Make sure you only allow a certain amount of time for checking the mail, and then ensure that you stick to that schedule.

What about talking on the phone?

If you know you are wasting too much time chatting on the Internet with people who interrupt you, make it so no one can contact you during certain hours. This way you won’t be wasting your time and will be practicing effective time management.

Another good (or bad) time-waster is “looking for information”. You need to be organized to have effective time management. You need to be able to have the files or information you need at your fingertips.

Make sure you set your system up so everything falls in an orderly fashion. This way you can always find something in a hurry. This will help you to speed up the progress of your project or day.

If you are stuck in an office waiting, don’t waste your time. Always bring a pad of paper and a pen if you can. At the very least, you can organize your day by writing down your plans.

If it is something else you can take with you for a project, it’s even better. You can control your life, but you can’t control time. Get organized today and use effective time management to meet your life goals.

I desire to thank you for visiting. Go up before and look around to discover other helpful tips and information.

Even though, you may now know how to adopt effective time management habits and tips to be a successful person, but all words no actions is simply does not make your goals come true.

Take action now is the most right thing to do if you want you goals realized.

Without an effective and proper time management system, there will not be much goal-oriented lifestyle to hope for.

Understanding the fact that an effective program for time management habit may be easy to follow and implement and now allowing you to side-track is really allowing you to enjoy your life once again. So, please don’t wait any longer before giving another excuse to realize your goals again.

tips on time management

Time management is one of the hardest things to master. For some people it comes easy and for others it can be very difficult. It all matters on how motivated you are to get things done. The first step you need to take in having effective time management is setting your priorities straight. Once you know what needs to be done and how much time you have to do it, it will make the process easier. Most people know what needs to be done, but the problem comes when you need to turn your thoughts into actions. Thier are many factors that go into whether or not your thoughts will be turned into actions. It’s all about economics. If I do this, will my future become easier or harder. Too many people live in the moment, thinking that some things can wait. Procrastinating usually stems from this ideology. Sometimes it is just plain laziness.Sometimes people need tools to help them manage time. Ask yourself what your tools are? Your tool may be an organizer, PDA, laptop, notebook or it may even be writing things down on your hand. Once you know what works best for you, use it! By not doing things throughout your day, you are essentially not living your life. Set goals and use your time managment skills to achieve those goals. By doing this you can achieve things you want to do with your life and you will find the life is not as hard as it may seem!

time management tracking

Critical for managers!

Project tracking, cost tracking and time management are critical areas for management. Managers need visibility into the activities of their employees and insight into where they stand with their projects. The best software programs will provide powerful Project Time and costing data in real time with a history overview for comparison so managers can be confident that their teams are producing at their full capacity.

Today’s business environment demands managers operate their organizations leaner and smarter while becoming more cost effective. Informational insight is power and having a palate of over a hundred and thirty five customizable time and cost management reports available in a software program is the cutting edge of results.

Software Time Deployment

Time is a major factor when considering deployment of new software. A web-implemented software package means only a single installation on a main server and others access with a simple web URL. If your company is already tracking manually, it should be as simple as the importation of your existing data to save time or bringing over your existing data through integration with other software such as Microsoft Project, Microsoft Project Server and/or Intuit QuickBooks(Jobs, Tasks, Resources etc.).

Software Training

Do you think you are too busy for change? Many companies feel they are too busy to train their employees. Learning new software doesn’t appear to be productive for your employees and can seem costly for your corporation. Finding the right software company that will stand behind their products and help with training can be daunting. However, that company is out there and the better you understand the advantages to your company, the faster you can make the right decision on your Time and Project Tracking software.

Project tracking, project time costing and project time management software will provide real time information to shape your team’s production to full capacity. However, training should be easily implemented and user friendly in order to ensure employee adoption of the new software system. A program’s adoptability rests in how easy it is to implement into your existing system with the least impact on business as usual. It is sometimes difficult to get employees to integrate a new system, but if a new software system ensures easy implementation and simple data entry they are more likely to adopt that system.

The company’s management team and its employees need to access information in real time to make informed decisions and optimize productivity. Employees need the right software solutions that make their jobs easier to ensure solutions are adopted as part of their daily routine.

The right software for project tracking, cost tracking and time management, is the key to a company’s productivity and of course their bottom line profits. Finding a software company that can deliver ease in transitioning from an old system to the new, cost effective system that will deliver big in tracking projects, ensures a smooth performance in operation.

time management tip

Time management tips for law school exams?

My boyfriend knows all of the information, but on his law school exams, he spends too much time on multiple choice questions. Does anyone have “been there-done that” tips for time management on these exams? He only had 15 minutes left to write his essay on his practice midterm today!

Thanks for any help you can give?

With multiple choice, the best thing he can do is practice. There are a lot of sources for practice questions (i.e. Q&A books, MBE study guides), all of which should be available in his school’s library. He might want to talk to his professors to see which ones they would recommend.

He needs to be able to eliminate the wrong answers first. The best way to do this is to read the call of the question (i.e. the question posed at the end of the scenario), then read the answer choices. At that point, one (maybe two) will pop out as just plain wrong (e.g. the answer mistates the law). Then, read the problem. Having an idea of what to look for in the problem reduces the need to go back through it again. That’s the biggest piece of advice.

However, in order to do this well, he needs to practice. By that I don’t just mean “do a lot of problems”. He needs to do them under timed conditions (something approximating the time he will have on the exam).

What companies provide excellent entry level training programs?

Hi all,

I graduate from university next year, and have been told that it is about time I start applying for jobs.

I am really interested in companies that provide manager in training programs, management trainee programs, or leadership development programs. No matter what you call it, essentially it is a program for new grads to explore the company through a number of rotations in different areas of the business, and continue learning.

I know Telus, GE and HBC provide some really excellent options. What are some other companies that have excellent new grad training programs?

timemanagement tools

Finding the right
time management exercises
for you and your needs can be rather difficult. Many people do not know how to manage their time effectively.

They spend hours upon hours each month spending time ineffectively and becoming agitated.

However, they do not have to waste this time. Instead, they can use simple time management tools that even children can understand.

Like any other life skill, it is something to be learned and practiced until you master the timemanagement techniques that work best for your life and lifestyle. However, if right now you have poor
time management in the workplace
you risk your very job, and definitely your future career development, and you definitely risk making your job much more stressful than it should ever need to be.

So, let us start at the beginning, with two basic steps to master in learning time management skills.

The most important time management skill that you can use is
keeping track of your time.
Many people spend their days just doing whatever they want, then wonder why they get none of the importing things on their TO DO list done by the end of the day.

However, if you keep track of your time while you are on a task, you will be more motivated to complete it. Otherwise, you will not really care when you finish the task.

Another great idea that you can use when you are trying to manage your time is
using a chart
. A chart can give you the information about what you do everyday.

Simply
write everything that you do down on the chart for seven days
, and see where you can improve. For example, make only one trip to the store per week, instead of two or three.

This way, you can
save gas, driving time, and energy
to put towards more important tasks.

Finding the right
time management exercises
for your needs can be difficult. However, it does not have to be.

Instead, you can spend your time enjoying your free time and finishing your tasks early. Even just starting by getting more organized, to at least write down what you would like to get done everyday into a TO DO list, and calculating roughly how much time each task will take to do is a step in the right direction. This was you can at least see if you are dramatically overloading yourself, by not being realistic about how long it will take to complete all those tasks.

Do not waste any more of your time, instead spend your time learning good time management tips so that you will soon be doing what you enjoy, thanks to these techniques!

Warning:
You can waste all your precious time running in circles, becoming dangerously stressed and even risking your job, if you don’t master the essential skill of time management.

Get the best timemanagement tools and improve your life efficiency. Only then can you really appreciate the pleasures of life and be relaxed enough to improve your life even more for yourself and your loved ones.

As
Helene Malmsio
from
Time Management in the Workplace
website says “Ensure that you have a clear idea of what you need to accomplish in your working day and be realistic! You will do yourself no favours by trying to complete a week’s worth of work in one day. All you will accomplish if you try this technique is a big ball of stress in your stomach and a head ache to go with it.”

Learning time management in the workplace
and finding the right
time management exercises
for you is actually not difficult. It may take time at first, but once you’ve mastered the necessary skills, you will feel less pressured and be able to work better.
