Many of my friends, regardless of whether they are working or busy at home taking care of kids, never have the time to sit down and read their favourite book.

Work can tire you out as well and by the time you sit down, you just want to lie on your bed and start dozing off.

Many of us buy a lot of books but never had the chance to complete reading the book and some did not even have the chance to take the book out from the shopping bag even!

Does it sound familiar to you? We simply cannot find time to sit down and read a good book. This is not a good excuse and we all know it.

Have you ever wondered why the successful people are always busy and yet accomplish more things than the average man? Their secret lies in good time management. They maximize the use of their time even while they travel, jog or do other repetitive menial tasks that require less mental power.

Just imagine your spouse can have her good night sleep while you can still enjoy what the audio book you are listening and keeping you awake has to offer.

While there is no great deal of time saved if you compare selecting the exact track you want to listen to flipping through several pages in the case of hardcover or paperback books, this functional feature should not be overlooked. It is only in darkness that one realizes its benefit lies in the ease of accessing the desired content to listen.

And how about a change in the way you tell bedside stories to get your kids to sleep? With an audio book you can simply play it for them until they fall asleep. Try it, you can possibly save the time you spend reading to your kids each night before they sleep!

Audio books that are specifically created for children are more fun than your reading can be. You probably were not trained to talk like the big bad wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood, right? But most of the narrators of children’s audio books were trained to read in ways children love.

Do you have to deal with people who just love to waste your time? They will creep up on you and talk nonstop for hours on a trivial subject, or maybe they just want to gossip.

I used to get a lot of these, until I said enough is enough, and I actually went and got a sign made which I hung over my cubicle. Want to know what it said? It was quite simple. All it said was “If you have nothing to do, Please don’t do it here”. Alas, that became a talking point too, and I had to start explaining what was the meaning of that sign itself, ie the fact that you cannot do the “nothing” over at my cubicle seemed to tickle them rather than to make them go away. Most of the time, it really seems like they had nothing to do.

Be careful when someone says that they want to talk to you for a little while. That little while usually turns out to be about a quarter to half an hour, and may even stretch long beyond that. So the next time someone asks for a little while of your time, ask them how long it is going to take, and when they give you an answer to that question, you look up your calendar/planner and tell them that you are busy right now, but that you have an open slot in your schedule at such and such a time for that few minutes that they have said they need to talk with you.

This will immediately reduce your exposure to these time wasters, as many people will not have the patience to wait for an appointment, and they can usually resolve whatever it is that they had to consult you by either solving it themselves, or by talking with someone else. So long as they get their issue resolved, they will not find the need to disturb you again.

The other effect of actually setting up an appointment to discuss things, even be it just 5 minutes of your time, lets people know that you take your time seriously, and that they should not waste it. Since you have scheduled a time period to them, they will have to focus on getting their point acros, without rambling on and making idle talk instead. And since they have some time to clearly think about what they are going to talk with you about, this gives them a laser focus and makes them able to formulate their questions to you in a better way.

The key thing is not to allow others to rob you of your time. Dan Kennedy in his book “No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs”, calls these people Time Vampires, because they literally suck the time out of you and your schedule.

So don’t give in to people who just want you for a “little while”. If it is really important, they will have to be content with speaking to you about it at a later time.

It’s nearly 2008 and some of you will be looking over the year and thinking about what you have achieved over the past year. For some, nothing much will have happened, for others their whole life will have changed. Personal development begins in your head and GOYA method will help a lot.

Why has nothing happened for you?

Simply put, you are too lazy to do anything about your personal development. There I have said it. I can hear screams of reluctance and abuse at me now, but it does not matter, you are only fooling yourself and you know who you are.

Therefore, for 2008 I would like to present this method for personal development.

It is an acronym for:

Get Off Your Arse!

To do something, anything, you have to take action, to take action you have to get off your arse first and make a start. That is what this article is about.

I do not want to hear whines, excuses, or anything else just read this through and then Get Off Your Arse.

Getting to the stage of SOYA

A lot of us will have gotten to the stage of SOYA (Sitting On Your Arse) at some point in our lives. Indeed it is good to have a bit SOYA time but too much can lead to a permanent state of SOYA and your arse gets flatter with all the sitting, the only exercise you get is flicking the remote and eating those packets of cheese and onion crisps. The younger SOYAs among you will get a little more exercise with the Nintendo Wii and PS3 and Xbox 360s but you are still at the SOYA stage and need to GOYA more before your life becomes a virtual world and soon the Matrix will have you.

For those of us on board the Nebucadnezzar it is still useful to read this just for a little jolt.

For those of you who do not think you are at the SOYA stage of life answer these questions:

1. Is your Arse permanently flat?

2. Does it take you about half an hour before you can walk properly getting off your couch?

3. Do you make old man noises when you get off the couch?

4. Do you make old man noises when you go to sit on the couch?

5. Do you have some goals that involve Getting Off Your Arse?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above it is time for some GOYA.

GOYA in action

There are at least two voices inside you at any one time. One voice saying take the easy option just turn the TV on, and SOYA and the other, less dominant voice, saying come on, I need some goya time.

The trick to getting off your arse is making the GOYA voice more dominant than the SOYA voice.

Quick Exercise

I want you to think back to a time, recently, where you were in two minds to go and do something but instead elected to stay in bed or sit on the couch and watch TV. For example, you need to get up and tidy the house but instead you stayed in bed or watched TV or read your book. What did that voice sound like inside your head, if you cannot remember listen for it next time. The SOYA voice sounds like MR T ‘Sit on your ass fool, aint nobody gonna clean the house’ and the GOYA voice sounds like Mickey Mouse on Helium ‘Oh shucks, thats a shame coz the house needs a good clean’

Listening for the SOYA and GOYA voice

You will soon begin to hear the little voices whenever you have to do something. Recognising them is the first stage and when you hear them, it will be a revelation. Now when I say hear them you dont literally hear them you hear them in your head. You might not think they are there but they definitely are. Any time you have to do something they are there.

The next stage is switching the voices around.

This can be tricky at first but when you do it once it becomes very easy all the other times and you will see a dramatic difference in your life. Now I know I am being a bit tongue in cheek here but I do mean this. When you switch the voices and use the SOYA voice for the GOYA voice i.e. MR T voice is now the GOYA voice and Mickey Mouse on Helium is the SOYA voice you will see an amazing difference in your productivity, you exercise routine, everything you need the GOYA voice for.

Another exercise for today

To try this method out try hearing the new GOYA voice telling you what to do whenever you are procrastinating about something. Obviously, it doesn’t have to be MR Ts voice but you want a commanding voice, have a little fun with it. Eventually the voice will be your won voice and you begin to do tings you have been putting off.

That should work fine. Sometimes if mine are having a rough time shedding I will put them in a see thru container with air holes with some warm water and a paper towel to rub against. I’m sure you already have it, but a hide or snake cave is something good for them to rub against to get the shed started. Just make sure that they shed their eye caps. Retained eye caps are not good. Good luck!

The first thing a sales manager should teach his sales men about effective time management is the appropriate hours to make sales calls and whether a prospective customer should be dealt with over the phone or face to face. This basic knowledge could save a sales man a lot of time and resources.

Some companies use their marketing service staff to assist the regional and branch managers in directing salesmen to manage their time more efficiently. Some others grant clerical help in field offices to reduce the amount of paper work. Many firms provide audio-visual equipment to create more persuasive sales presentations to make the most of the precious three or four hours of face to face interviews with potential customers each day.

The amount of time a salesman delegates for travel and work depends on various factors such as the management’s knowledge of the sales territory, the present and prospective accounts, traffic conditions, etc. All of the salesman’s plans must be flexible because the workload and territorial boundaries may very from time to time. Managers cannot afford to work entirely at their desks, using control maps, it is important that they get into the territory, not only to make logical alterations but also to bolster the salesman’s morale and to make sure he values the plans that he is expected to follow.

The way in which a salesperson should plan his time is not too different from how people from other professions should manage theirs. It is only a matter of priority, since certain tasks are best accomplished within a particular time period than others. It is therefore essential that salesmen be sold on the need to plan well.
