people management

People management skills are vital for managers – it may sound simple, yet some managers find it so challenging.

But there are just a few simple ideas that you can start to incorporate.

To get the best results you have to be very good at people management…and it’s not as hard as you might think.

Here are the secrets of the very best managers:-

The best at people management…

1) Manage!

They focus on getting their people to deliver the key activities and don’t attempt do too much themselves. The best managers delegate widely, using the ethic ‘Ask for forgiveness, not for permission’ to free their people from blame or wrongdoing.

2) Build the Best Teams

Leveraging the exceptional talents of all the people around them, managers develop and utilise capability fully – and glue it together.

3) Focus on Delivery

Managers are there to deliver the day to day tactical results the business or organisation needs. Here, there is little space for strategy or vision as such, but those great at managing peoplewill keep a reference point there. Every manager’s defined goal is measurable results.

4) Build Relationships

As it’s all about people, great managers build relationships easily and make it a priority, day-in-day out. They spend a lot of time with and listening to, their people.

5) Accept Feedback

Actually, they don’t just accept it, they suck feedback in – they use their excellent listening skills to seek out feedback all the time – in every interaction.

6) Develop Others

Grasping the opportunities, the best managers quickly link them to those who can make progress in their own development – and in line with ongoing Succession Planning, prepare for the future well in advance.

7) Are Accountable

They are very clear that they are ‘where the buck stops’. No blame elsewhere, not upwards deflection of decisions; no ’someone else’s fault’. They are where the action is and they accept it. It’s down to them.

8) Set Standards

To ensure that everyone is clear, great managers have simple and clear standards throughout their area of operation – ideally created in collaboration with their people.

9) Are Determined

Focusing entirely on value-creation, they stick to plans, policies and change programmes like glue. They have a skill to know and deliver what is right, without veering from their Vision.

10) Can Be Trusted

The best managers are ethically sound, fair and honest. They make promises only when they know they can deliver. Everyone is treated equally and their own behaviour models fairness and transparency.

Simple steps, using them can make 90% of your management very, very effective. Checkout the website below for key information in 40 different people skills to develop your management skills fast!

time management seminar

With every employee using time management, more projects are being done and in a faster period of time. This makes your business more profitable. Sending your employees to a time management seminar can bring out the best in your business.

It will show you how you can set your list of priorities. They will explain to you the importance of spending time wisely. They will tell you how you are in control of the way you spend time, but you aren’t in control of how many hours in a day there are. They will tell you not to overwork yourself. Do not schedule yourself more than 168 hours in a week. This includes both business and personal time in your schedule. You have to remember to take time out for yourself.

What to expect at this seminar?

This kind of personal development seminar will show you how to create your schedules. They will teach you how to be realistic with the times you are giving yourself. They will teach you how you can use small amounts of time in your day that would normally be wasted without your control and turn them into usable time.

These seminars teach you how to set goals for yourself. These goals, if followed correctly can save you a lot of time in your life. Your life will become less hectic and you will be more successful in the business world.

The much important seminar will show you not everything in life is a priority. They will teach you how to fix the areas that are wasted time. By the time you are done with your time management seminar, you will be able to handle your time and appointments in a clear way.

You won’t feel like you’ve run around all day long and not accomplished anything. You will keep time in your life for everything you want to accomplish and not just one area.

If this sounds like a good plan of action for you, there are plenty of such seminars all over the internet. Simply search for the one that seems to get to the point right away. Your time is valuable. Don’t let it slip through your fingertips.

Whether you are an employee or employer, you have to know there are such time management seminars available, however no actions does not really bring you to greater heights.

Take action now is the most right thing to do if you want you goals realized.

Without an effective and proper time management system, there will not be much goal-oriented lifestyle to hope for.

learn time management

While there are many common aspects when learning time management skills most people do not take into account their personality type when deciding on their methods. Who you are and how you deal with your problems is essential in planning for good time management so here are a few common types of personalities, how they waste time and how they can manage time better.

Busy

Busy types always feel there is no time to do anything because they are so busy rushing around fixing problems and working at what they think is important. The problem with anyone who thinks they are too busy is that they probably make themselves busier than they need to be. This is often caused by poor priority planning spending too much time on small inconsequential problems they could delegate or even leave to a less busy time. They also tend to rush from crisis to crisis leaving piles of tasks behind them not done creating more problems in the long run which is a planning problem. To counter this, a busy personality needs to realize while they are a doer they need to set their priorities right and direct their energies to the right problems at the right times. By doing this a busy personality can be very productive.

Talkative

Some people just love to talk and socialize and while this can lead to great relationships and people with this trait often make good sales people the tendency to get side tracked by chatting cuts into their time; often this also leads to this personality type blaming their work more then themselves for their workload. People with great social skills can be a real asset but to overcome their time wasting problems you may think that isolating them from others would help; this in fact makes this worse! A social person needs to be social to feel good and be productive but must also learn that moderation is the key, having a beeper to remind them of the time every now and then can spur them on if they get too caught up and having a space that is isolated to work on important things is necessary for them to avoid interruptions which can draw out their natural instincts.

Meticulous

A meticulous person is very precise in all that they do making sure every task they finish is perfect and in order and completely without fault. The problem is that they spend too much time on each task to get them all done! While the meticulous person might have a good idea of priorities they do not have a good sense of time allocation. While it can be hard to get this personality type to learn a new skillset they can learn to divide their time better. Instead of following one project through until the end they should set a certain amount of time in a day and then change to another project no matter if they are finished or not. While this does not seem to finish things any faster it does allow freshness every time you swap projects that is more inventive and efficient which means when you come back to a half finished project the second half can be a breeze with a fresh look instead of being bogged down in one for a whole day!

If you see some of your own personality in these archetypes you may just be spending your time incorrectly but learning time management skills that fall in line with your personality and your strengths can be more rewarding and effective than a cookie cutter solution.

gtd software

GTD (or Getting Things Done) is, simply said, a time management system. In 2002, David Allen published a book called Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. This book started it all. David’s book is a must read for anyone interested in practicing GTD.

For me, GTD has been a god-send. Over time, I have used a Day-Runner, a Day-Timer, a plain-old notebook, then I followed Covey ( of course, with my Covey notebook), and eventually developed my own “system” for organizing myself. Nothing ever worked very well. I was always searching for the “silver bullet” organizational system. For me, GTD has been that “silver bullet”.

I cannot say enough good things about GTD. Getting Things Done (GTD) has allowed me to:

- Provide a balance with my work and life activities.
- Be better prepared for meetings, discussions, trips to the grocery store, hardware store, video store, etc.
- Get out of my e-mail inbox! At certain intervals throughout the day, my e-mail inbox has ZERO e-mails.
- GTD has taught me to be know exactly what the “next action” is going to be before I move something from my e-mail inbox.
- Free my mind… I don’t “wake up at 3AM worrying about things”. I have a moleskine notebook that gets an entry for anything that pops into my head that I need to follow-up on. If it’s in my moleskine notebook, I don’t have to worry about it. I know the thought or idea is in a safe place.
- Know what to do at the right time. Sometimes my mind is only ready for certain things. GTD allows me to pick and choose what I am doing. For example, at the end of a long week, the most I feel up for is “sorting paperclips”. If that’s the case, I know it is time to leave work and go home.
- Plan my time accordingly. Be it work or non-work activities, the Getting Things Done methodology (GTD) had allowed me to coordinate and prioritize all aspects of my life.

I could go on and on… I’m pretty passionate because I have seen the results first hand. GTD is not about a software tool or using a PDA; don’t be fooled by anything you read about tools. GTD is not about palm pilot’s or Blackberry’s. GTD is about “freeing your mind” so that you can focus on the task at hand.

I’d recommend reading David’s book and giving GTD a try!

project management

There are many reasons that corporate executives turn to external consultants to provide project management support for their projects.  The challenges that organizations face include: sub-par project performance, the potential for lost credibility, lack of experience with a particular project type, and a lack of internal project management practitioners.  Project management consulting firms can supply experienced practitioners that offer high-quality solutions to the complex issues facing project teams.

The following are six ways that project management consulting firms are making a difference with leading organizations.

ADDRESSING PROJECT-RELATED ISSUES

Often times it is the highly visible, at-risk project that drives management to recognize that a better project management approach is required.  Frequently, project management consultants are brought in to address various project-related issues including:  poor on-time performance (key dates being missed), unsatisfactory financial results (unnecessary expenditures to meet deadlines), dysfunctional team dynamics (poor communication, team in-fighting, and misdirection), and complicated team composition (multi-locational, language barriers, external partnerships, etc).

By providing the right combination of methodology, training, resources and technology, project management consulting firms can help executives determine how to most effectively focus the resources they have available.  They can also help preserve the integrity of project deliverables by ensuring that issues are identified in a timely manner and key dates are being consistently met.  These tools and support solutions help improve overall project metrics, while enabling project teams to work more effectively and efficiently in high-stress environments.

PROVIDING ADVANCED PROJECT ANALYSIS TO UPPER MANAGEMENT

In many cases, upper management has difficulty evaluating project performance and making the best decisions because they lack visibility to key project information. A project management consulting firm can provide the necessary reports and analysis to equip managers with key information on upcoming obstacles, possible project pitfalls, and potential resource constraints.  When this type of information is incorporated as part of a more encompassing project management approach, the consultant can convert standard project data from a reactive snapshot of historical information into a predictive project analysis tool.

FILLING AN EXPERTISE GAP

Projects are sometimes launched without regard for the expertise and experience of the project teams working on them.  Also, a project’s complexity, magnitude, and uniqueness may be a significant concern even for the most experienced teams.  Finally, the project management proficiency required to lead major a project initiative may be unavailable or in short supply.   In these instances, a project management consulting firm can provide the required expertise necessary to drive the project to a successful outcome.

ESTABLISHING A PROACTIVE APPROACH

Many projects, by default are managed using a reactive approach to problem solving.   This style of project management creates an environment where “fire fighting” is the norm and the latest project emergency demands the attention.  A proactive project management approach enables project teams to identify obstacles earlier in the project, which allows them to make better decisions and provide more cost effective solutions.  By implementing the right mix of training, consulting and advanced tools, a project management consulting firm can establish an early warning system that provides management a forward-looking tool to ensure their project will be executed as-agreed.

OFFERING SHORT-TERM SUPPORT SOLUTIONS

The lack of qualified personnel to support a congested project pipeline is an ongoing concern to many organizations.  Hiring and training full-time resources and mentoring them in the intricacies of an advanced project management approach can require more time than organizations have available.  Project management consulting firms can fill the gap between the immediate need project management support and the organization’s current capabilities.

PROJECT ASSURANCE

Some projects are so critically important to the success of an organization that failure is simply not an option.  In some cases, a past project may have been so poorly executed that management wants assurance that future projects will be more successful.  A project management consulting firm can assist in this scenario by helping to deploy advanced risk mitigation tools and providing expert scrutiny of existing project schedules.

CONCLUSION

Project management consulting firms can bring a combination of experience, knowledge and advanced tools that are not readily available in most organizations. By combining those capabilities with an understanding of best-in-class project management practices it is easy to see how the benefits realized from using a project management consulting firm can far outweigh the out-of-pocket investment.

time management tips

Are you usually the last one to leave your office every night? Do you have trouble managing projects? This article is designed to provide you with some time management tips that will guarantee you’ll never have to stay late at work again. Specifics may vary from person to person; however, the following information includes helpful and important guidelines from which everyone can benefit.

Not many people enjoy having to stay beyond the usual quitting time in the office and you probably feel the same way. Of course, occasionally you cannot avoid working late. Yet, a good majority of reasons for a late stay involve poor planning. We’re sure if you think about it you can come up with dozens of strategies to steer clear of working beyond your usual quitting time.

Here are 9 time management tips that will help you leave the office on time:

Time Management Tip #1: Keep your working area in order.
You might be amazed how a messy desk can be so distracting that it can cause you to waste many minutes, perhaps an hour or more each day, looking for stuff.

Time Management Tip #2: Write things down at the beginning of your day, or the night before. Regular readers of this newsletter have heard this suggestion from us before. Having a plan of attack for the day can do wonders in keeping you on schedule.

Time Management Tip #3: Minimize phone calls at 4:55.
We’re not suggesting that you do not answer your phone (your boss probably wouldn’t appreciate that). But be aware of a conversation that might last well beyond your scheduled departure time, and if possible, ask if you can continue the call in the morning when your mind is fresh.

Time Management Tip #4: Begin meetings earlier.
If you have the authority to schedule meetings, try not to set one up any time after 4 pm because odds are the meeting may go on well past 5 pm.

Time Management Tip #5: Speak up.
As mentioned above, sometimes working late can be unavoidable. However, that does not imply that you should feel obligated to work late all the time. If you have to be home at a certain time for your family, say so.

Time Management Tip #6: Prepare to leave.
Things like backing up your computer files for the day are included as part of the job. There’s no reason why you can’t perform such tasks at 4:50 rather than at 5:00.

Time Management Tip #7: Beware of the talky late-day visitor.
You know who were referring to: the co-worker who shuttles over to your workspace and engages you in a conversation that becomes a 1/2-hour distraction, keeping you away from your work and causing you to stay late so you can finish.

Time Management Tip #8: Keep yourself out of the “I must catch up” trap.
Admit it; you never really do catch up fully with all the work you have to do. And staying late probably won’t change that. Remind yourself, the work will be there tomorrow.

Time Management Tip #9: Be true to yourself. You may often feel the urge to take on more work than any human being can handle, maybe as a way of impressing your boss. Working hard and striving for promotions is great. But think about it, does your boss really expect you to handle more than you can all the time and stay well past 5 pm each and every evening? If so, you might consider speaking with him or her about their stance on quality of work vs. quantity of work.

This is most apparent if you live anywhere that the seasons prevail.  You see spring, summer, autumn and winter.  Each season has its advantages and sometimes its troubles.  The Native Americans counted their summers to determine their age.  Children are generally immune to a change of times.

Most of us recognize that a Recession or a Depression spells widespread trouble.  So does drought and famine, flood and any other natural disaster.  All of these are well beyond the influence of the individual when it comes to changing or fixing..  That is another way of saying; no single person can change the course of these kinds of problems.

Occasionally, we can move away from these troubles and sometimes we can’t (where can you go when the problem is worldwide? What angle is available?).   Sometimes the problem is so personal that the solution can’t be found through ordinary means.  “Who you gonna call?  1 800 My ANGEL?”  What are you going to do when a real live angel shows up?

It is no longer a question of whether there are angels or not.  It really is that question…what am I going to do? Angels belong to the unique group called “supernatural” or we perceive them as “ghostly, weird, bizarre, or paranormal.”  Normal people don’t mess with strange, ghostly people.

Why do angels come to children most of the time?  Why don’t they come to us, why don’t they come more often?  It’s only natural because we would not enjoy their company.  Most of us are not ready.  Got culture shock?  You bet we do, that’s why the first thing they say is, “Don’t be afraid. I’m your fellow servant.”  Even Mary, the mother of Jesus, had to be assured that she was not unworthy.  Her angel said, “Hail Mary, do not be afraid, for you have found favor in the sight of God.”

You are worthy of an angel’s visit!

Angels come to children because no one else is in the condition to receive them.  Kids don’t have the same difficulty we adults do when it comes to “suspending our disbelief.”  You see angels will come to anyone who can believe. It wouldn’t hurt if we also didn’t feel so damn guilty, either.  That’s what’s so sad about it.  We could enjoy them, if we were not so guilty. We are perfectly qualified to receive them, if we weren’t so afraid of them.

Joseph Smith was very young when he saw an angel.  He was still an innocent country boy!  What does this have to do with us?  We don’t like angels fooling around with us! But just a moment, what do angels do?  Keeping it simple, an angel’s job is to bring a message.  He brings the word when he delivers his message.  He talks with you.  Some people call it chatting.  He doesn’t come to command or address you but to chat with you, to converse with you, to have an “intimate” talk with you.

Can we learn from someone else’s experience with an angel?  Not long ago an owner of a carpet cleaning company had a series of visits from an angel, he came to know as Mark Angeli.  This angel brought timely messages about how to market and manage his carpet cleaning business.  This is because he did, what the angel said. With an angel’s help, he saved his dying business.  In addition, he is currently able to withstand any effects the recession is throwing at him.  For a sample of this carpet cleaner’s angelic experience, send a blank email to yesdocmiller@gmail.com with “carpet cleaner’s angel” in the subject line.

In these few moments, we learned that disasters including our recession are often bigger than most individuals have power to change.  Although there is no 800 number to call help, even if we knew WHAT we needed, is available.  Of the many forms, angels are empowered to assist. Usually, however, our fear or guilt gets in the way of this supernatural help.  When we can do as children do so well by suspending our disbelief then angels can attend us.  Mark Angeli helped an owner of a carpet cleaning company reclaim direction and control through using marketing techniques and methods of management.  Perhaps we can learn from his experiences, too.
