Project management is one area of business that is undoubtedly valuable for any enterprise. As such project management courses abound just about everywhere, including via the Internet, all seeking to fill the need for the training of project managers who handle various initiatives for their organizations. However, the question is whether these project management courses, especially those found online, are enough to prepare participants to handle demanding projects that truly adds value to the business.

In part, successful projects define the forward motion of a business. Aside from the achievements of day-to-day operations, the success rate of individual projects within the organization determines the capabilities of the business organization. Good project management can add prestige as well as revenue to any business.

By definition, all projects are bound by time. They are not continuous activities but are set at specific timeframes. Some projects are recurring or periodic but nevertheless these projects last only for a short period, maybe weeks or months or a just a few years. To add to that restriction, resources may also be defined and inflexible. Thus the role of the project manager is to work with these restrictions and still achieve the objectives set for the projects.

Project management courses are therefore invaluable in training project managers to handle the complexities of each project. However, are investments into web-based project management courses sufficient for the needs of a business?

General Review of Online Project Management Courses

A quick online search on project management courses will yield millions of websites. A good proportion of this number are distance learning course offerings that are conducted using the Web. There are basic courses in project management and there are also advanced courses. The difference is in the course content with the advanced topics ranging from organizational culture, conflict management, risk management, contracts administration, critical chain, event chain and other such aspects and concepts of a full-blown enterprise project. A module on software-based project management is usually included for such courses and may also be provided in detail as a separate course.

The main drawback of some of these online courses is that it mainly leans onto technology related project management. It is almost always assumed that the course learnings will be applied on either a software development project or some other technical engineering type of endeavor. Nevertheless, there are other project management courses that are applicable to a wider range of business scenarios.

Getting Certified

Another area of online courses in project management that needs attention is with regards to certification. The better investment logically is a course that is university-certified or at least recognized by an appropriate professional board as providing equivalent education or fulfills examination requirements for their standards. Online courses that are not certifiable are best left to new project managers who just need a refresher or quick skills upgrade on project management.

Project management courses are indispensable in equipping your project leaders to gain success in your business projects. Online project management courses in particular are very convenient. However, ensure that the course content is appropriate to your particular industry or project goals and that certification is provided when applicable.

Time management is one of the most important skills with which you need to equip yourself during college. You will need to balance your studies as well as your social activities that come with being a student.

Entering a college is just the easy part, finishing it is the difficult one. College can be enjoyable and frustrating at the same time, especially if you have tough professors. Here are a few things you perhaps thought of while visiting your university campus for the first time.

 The campus is big. I will have to go to classes as well as attend parties.
 This looks really scary. Will I survive?
 Ok now that I have gotten into college, what further?
 Where will I find the bathroom?

Intelligence is not all that is required to get through college. How much you scored in the entrance exam and how you study is not all there is to getting through college. It is human nature to socialize. College provides you opportunity to do both.

It is extremely important to balance both social and academic activities. You might study all the time, but the stress could hinder your success. On the other hand, you could party everyday and lose out on everything else.

Some students do not see the importance of socializing while others do not know how important studying is.

Time management is all about relieving the stresses that come with college. If you have very little time to spare, here are a few ways of managing it.

 Set goals. Identify what you wish to achieve and give it top priority. Recognize your academic goal. You could achieve it in a day, week or semester.
Making goals gives you clarity when you have a lot of subjects to juggle and are under immense pressure. If you have many goals, then subdivide it into pieces that are manageable. Make a list of the things you need to achieve every week.

 Prioritize. Once you have identified the goals you wish to achieve, prioritize all the activities that are required. This helps you identify the tasks that need your immediate attention and those that can be left for later. Making deadlines is a great way of achieving efficiency.
 Follow time management planning. Do not stray from your plan. Following your time management plan is essential. It is often easy to get distracted or convinced to stray from a particular plan that has been laid out. This puts off the schedule till later, and results in all the activities piling up leading to confusion and frustration.
 Use your extra time. For instance, if you have free time during a class, instead of just waiting for the professor, think about some assignment you need to complete. Use your time to think of a good topic for an essay you might have to write.

These are good ways of dividing your time plan into manageable pieces. This can help you save time for your friends too. The sooner you complete a task, the better it is for you.

You might feel that a day is too short for fitting in the numerous activities that you need to complete and sometimes you might feel it is impossible to finish anything. You just need to utilize the little time that you do have.

Make a management schedule so that you have a clear list of priorities that can help you avoid stress and frustration when it comes to completing all your tasks.

Some of us are blessed with an internal alarm clock. A little voice that wakes you up two minutes before your alarm goes off. This may be a blessing if that little voice also alerts you ten minutes before your son’s soccer game or before the school bell rings. However I don’t have that blessing.

Of course I have the internal ability to wake up 30 minutes BEFORE I have to wake up after only five hours of sleep. Unfortunately that alarm doesn’t seem to carry over into the waking hours. A thirty minute heads up would be handy.

Not having that constant heads up, instead, I wear the super mom cape as I leap over shoes, bags and the cat in a flurry of movement. Knowing full well that the school bell is going to ring in ten minutes and the drive is a minimum of 11 minutes and three seconds if no one is in the cross walk and that light isn’t red. Of course, I will have to drive laps to locate a place I can stop to let my son in. All the parking spots are taken by those nannies with an internal clock.

I thought I had the alarm clock before I had children. As a professional Nanny I was never late for a soccer game, a music lesson, or birthday party. It turns out there are two types of internal alarm clocks. The one reserved for those of us who don’t have children under the age of 18. This one allows you to roll out of bed just before your alarm goes off after a night of 8 hours of restful sleep.

Then there’s the other alarm clock. The one called the mom alarm clock. This internal alarm wakes you up at three minutes before the baby needs to be fed, or two minutes before your toddler wets the bed, or 8 minutes before your five year old wakes up with growing pains. Sometimes these alarms are all in the same night. The mom alarm clock results in a pure hatred of the real alarm clock that wakes you up at 7 am as the children are peacefully sleeping telling you to start your day.

Luckily I have some other time management tips under my cape to keep me on time and organized as a mother. Despite the internal mom alarm clock working against me at night, my children make it to their soccer games and birthday parties, usually with the present and cleats in the bag. Was that the blue bag or the red one?

1. Initiation Document
This is the most important tool and first step of project management—the paper agreement. Here you are defining the project, making sure that everyone is aligned in work and objectives. This document must address the What, Why, How, Who, and When of the project, including the following items:

* Project’s Objective
* Scope of Work
* Deliverables
* Timeline and Budget
* Assumptions

2. Project Plan
Depending on the scope of the project, this can be in the form of a simple text document, excel spread sheet, or Gantt chart. If it’s a large project, the plan should take different forms according to different phases. The text document is sufficient for showing main deliverables, dependencies, and a general timeline. The Gantt chart provides a more thorough representation of the project’s process. Other things to consider:

* Plan milestones
* Also break your milestones into items that can be delivered every 2-3 days
* Make clear assignments of tasks to each team member

3. Risk Management Plan

Risks are everywhere, so it is essential that you acknowledge its existence and possibility of occurrences when managing a project. As a team—

* Identify risks
* Rank them by likelihood and severity
* Brainstorm solutions

Also, don’t keep people in the dark. Along with the project plan, your risk management plan is something you should share with your client so that when issues do occur, they don’t see it as the first signs of project failure. In fact, they will see your risk management plan as a meticulous approach to the project.

4. Progress Updates
It is important to inform people of the project’s overall progress. Keep it succinct. The progress report should show the following points:

* Overall status
* Issues
* Delays
* On/Off Track
* Milestones/Achievements

Talk with the client to see which method of update they prefer—casual email, formal documentation, telephone—as well as the frequency.

5. Project Management Software

PM Software exists to help your team be on schedule, keep track of budget, and collaborate effectively. Do your research and find one that is easy to use and fits your needs.

it says i have 64 processes running in windows task management what will happen if i hit end process on all of then, do they come back on their own?, will it hurt or effect my puter??? got any answers I sure could use one….

dude it will shutdown your computer system. but you can end some of the processes which aren’t necessary. you can always look up the processes through Google and get your answers of what this program such as svchost.exe is. I always end process some of the programs not all of them cause it could cause serious errors if you close a program which is running your computer the way it is form background. I suggest dont end process any of the process at all.

This is in regards to stress management. What is the connection between relaxation, imagination and breathing?

I am doing a stress management course and cannot decide which answer it should be.
I have been pondering over this for quite some time so help with this is going to be so appreciated.

The way you breathe (consciously) can create tension, relaxation and a lot of other mental, physical or emotional states…. unconsciously, it reflects your state of being.
Breath directly affects the chi or energy flow in the body.

A relaxed state can open up the imagination and that state can be achieved through control of the breath.

Don’t have a clue what the stress mgmt. course is wanting as an answer though.

Gone are the days when project management used to be a task confined to doing up and down in front of the project manager, noting down the assigned work of the day on papers, writing daily report at the end of the day, submitting those etc. This is the era of web based project management or handling a project with the aid of Internet.

Web based project management works by centralizing complete project information onto a single server that tracks all the work being done. As a result every member of the team can access to the requisite info anytime.

Web based project management has several benefits over the conventional style of managing a project. The foremost and most outstanding feature is saving of time. Web based project management drastically reduces the amount of time consumed in handling a project manually. For now the work for the day can be seen as well as sent online. The project manager can go through it and even send the modifications through the same mode. Other merits of web based project management include convenience in doing the work, automatic mailers and notifications and so forth.

In order to further assist web technique of management many companies have come up with project management software. Project management software can help you to manage your project efficiently if the project requires contributions of multiple individuals or teams using a multi tiered development plan over a fixed area of time. The software is a great organizing tool. It organizes not just the parts of project as landmark targets but also organizes the output of the team member in a comprehensive manner. The software can be of tremendous use in almost every aspect of project handling. For instance advising adequate strategies and techniques, flowcharting tools to support workflow and design management that involves systematizing and developing the abstract ideas into a completely finished product, project handling tools offered by MS Outlook, mapping software solutions to structure and even restructure your progress levels and arrange the information structure of your company’s management teams.

If we try to take a look at kind and type of project management software, we find that several such software have marked their presence in the corporate world. Thus selecting one such software can be brain-taxing task. However prior to purchasing project management software there are certain crucial things that an individual should know. First, the prices of the software vary with the levels of sophistication and vice-a-versa. Usually project management software ranges from $50 to $20,000. Secondly you must know that the software will not accomplish tasks such as defining scope of the project, interaction with the project sponsor etc. but it will just help you in doing these jobs more efficiently and effectively.

If your project is small then grab software for handling small projects. This software will plan and schedule with only durations and not work estimates and resource capacity. At this level the software might just cause you an expense of $25.

While if your project is large then you need to have software that stimulate the project and reschedule and optimize it every time a change is made. This software provides us the capability to budget and schedule not only internal employees but also external consultants and vendors along with budgeting for equipment and travel expenditure. The cost of this software will be around $300- $500.

task manager bug

A bug is a mistake in the software application or application under test. Testing is executing a set of instructions to know how well a software application adheres to any set of specifications.

When you have done testing and it happens that you found out a defect in a software application, it is your responsibility to report it to the relevant authorities and have the bug fixed immediately. Once the development does the fixes for the reported defect it is the responsibility of the testing team to go to the ground and verify the fixes and make sure the new fix has not interfered with the previous functioning of the product. If the functionality of a product or a software application varies from what was previously meant to be then that is considered a bug. Different companies have different ways of dealing with software bug, the process followed differ but generally when a bug is found the first thing is to report by following the bug logging process, but first the team of testing engineers must be there just to be sure that it is a real product bug and not a set up before filling a default form. A bugzilla is software used for logging bug. When logging it is important that you give all the detailed information on all the steps taken.

Bug reporting is a process of communication, when a bug is found, the developer, program manager, development lead, test lead and any other related persons must be informed. This is to let the developer know every detail of the failure and be able to offer a solution. It is therefore important to give detailed information so that whoever is to do the work can do it easily. The report is the gap between the expected results and the actual that explains the scenario. The report should be written when you are very sure of the bug, not after you have done the test. Take time to diagnose the defect you are reporting, determine a possible cause it might help you discover more defects if any. Take time off before reading your bug report.

In most cases a project manager might need a document for discussion with some members of the team if the members are doing planned bug fixes; minor re-engineering projects, ongoing system maintenance, and the work breakdown structure can be used as a schedule template for the members performing the activities. This software is at times used for educational purposes as well as a best practice reminder tool for more experienced developers. It can be used as a guideline for steps taken by the maintenance team.

You will be required to review the WBS an explanation of each activity is provided and delete any task that is not used in your case like if there are task dealing with checking out defect reports from the defect tracking system and if the company does not use the tracking system just delete. Adjust the order of activities to fit your situation. For example if you feel the bug generating code may require more investigation before the engineer knows what code to look at just move the task to a later part of the investigation effort.

Like most men, I’ve been dumped. I’ll even admit I’ve been dumped more than once too! It was never easy and I certainly didn’t like it, but I will say that I have matured from the experience and there are a few things I have learned from the women who’ve dumped me. Below are some of the things I have learned.

Things I’ve Learned from Women Who’ve Dumped Me #1

You have got to give a woman her personal space. You do not want to invade a woman’s life so much that you are not giving her personal space. Trust is one of the key components in a good relationship and it is what women want. Yes, women like to cuddle, hold hands and hug and they may seem to always be around, but they need personal space also. If you have ever been cheated on you probably feel you need to know at all times where your girlfriend is and who she is with. But if you get into her personal space too much she is going to get the impression that you don’t trust her much. You may end up breaking up because of this.

Things I’ve Learned from Women Who’ve Dumped Me #2

It takes two people to make a relationship. Both people in the relationship contribute problems and happiness to the relationship. You can blame the other person all that you want and it is hard not too if you are suffering pain from a breakup. But the breakup was partially caused by you as one-half of the couple. Figure out what went wrong so that the next time you have a relationship it doesn’t happen again.

Things I’ve Learned from Women Who’ve Dumped Me #3

Not all relationships are meant to be. You may have been planning a future with your girlfriend in the way of a wedding, kids, vacations and more and then suddenly she broke all of it off. You have to learn that not all relationships were meant to be and it is a blessing that it was ended before you got in too deep and then found out too late that you weren’t in a good relationship.

Things I’ve Learned from Women Who’ve Dumped Me #4

You’ll get stronger as time goes by. The philosopher Nietzsche was the one who said whatever doesn’t kill me will make me stronger. That same thing will happen to you when dealing with a breakup from your girlfriend. The pain will be intense at first but will lessen with time. Usually you will emerge a stronger person with more maturity.

Things I’ve Learned from Women Who’ve Dumped Me #5

It is you who has to make good things happen. While you can’t control every little thing that happens to you, you can usually control how you react to those things. It is you, and not someone else, who has to control your future and be positive about it. You have to pick yourself up and go back out to meet new and exciting women. You can most likely another girlfriend pretty easily if you remain positive.

Try to have some fun in your life and follow some of the advice I’ve shared in this article on things I’ve learned from women who’ve dumped me and you will find that you are a stronger man now than you were before you were dumped.
