I wrote a few weeks ago about my aim to totally revamp my home office and make it a truly productive home office . Well, I just thought I would provide an update as to where I am with this. After deciding to proceed, I removed everything out of my home office and I was amazed with how much clutter I had accumulated over the years. There was no way that I was going to move all of this back into my new office. I removed my wall units and filled the walls to make it a clear canvas! I then had the walls painted and bought a new carpet.

I’ve been a fan of Google’s Calendar feature for a few years, as well as a user of Gmail for all of my email needs since before it came out of beta testing.  Google recently answered one of my personal productivity “wish list” items with its launch of a new “Tasks” management system. The Tasks, available from Google Labs, enables you to add items to a virtual “to do” list, assign due dates, and document details in notes.  The feature even gives “type A” personalities like me the satisfaction of checking a box when you’ve completed a task and seeing it crossed off your list.

Do it, defer it, and delegate it; the two minute rule; and organizing your practice Today’s guest post is by Larry Port, Founding Partner and Chief Software Architect for Rocket Matter, LLC . This post is part of series of posts on the Getting Things Done (”GTD”) productivity system that Larry is writing for top legal blogs this week. In our GTD for lawyers series so far we’ve discussed the basics of GTD, and introduced important concepts. We looked at writing your to-dos as “Next Action” items, and aggressively capturing all “open loops” (incomplete items). Now it’s time to start looking at organizing and prioritizing.

I recently treated myself to a netbook. Partly to save my back, mainly so I could get work done on the go. The netbook runs on XP (which I intend on keeping at the moment so shht) Having been a Mac person for far too long, and having not used windows in a very long time (Uni computers don’t count – they have limited access anyway, which is fair enough) I’ve forgotten that IT services in institutions have the facility to block stuff on your own (Windows) machine when using their wifi.

WTF? is a daily web show for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to learn how to naturally attract customers and get the FAME and FORTUNE they deserve. I’m sure you’ve heard about the law of attraction. Many people think just because we talk about “The Science Of Attracting Customers” that we mean through the Law Of Attraction… that’s not really what we mean.

In America, we have two extremes. We have the liberals and the conservatives. We have Democrats and Republicans. We have people who are for same sex marriage, and we have people who are against same sex marriage. So it’s only natural in this extremist society that a new type of Bridezilla emerges out of the woodwork that is to the left of the original. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: the DIYzilla.

I like to be efficient so that i can make time for the most important things – like reading, writing, and thinking. I have compiled a list of links with overviews so that you might be able to make use of some of these resources too. This list isn’t exhaustive and doesn’t even represent all of the sites that I have found helpful but it is a start. The stand-out one stop shop is Jamie Littlefield’s “Self-made Scholar” with her Self-education Resource List which contains a helpful list of links to full-text resources, tools, online learning and education communities, applications, and libraries.

Thursday, July 16, 2009 It’s hard to believe that this month of July is halfway over! And I’m halfway done with work before three days off (I had to work two days and one of them is done!) Actually, speaking of work, it was a fairly GOOD night.  I was all caught up fairly early.  No major issues.  I was a little nervous because as I was walking into work, a black cat crossed my path .  It was the strangest thing!  I was walking towards the hospital from the parking lot and I saw a black

There are lots of excuses people make for not progressing in a language; I’m not smart enough , it’s too hard, I can’t remember any words , etc. But the one I’ll almost always hear is I don’t have any time . Time is a funny thing. It can fly, run out, and be up. It can be spent, killed, and passed. It will tell and it is money. With all of these amazing things time does, people never seem to actually have any of it!! People seem to think that if you get more done in a day, you simply have more “free” time than they do.

Are you one of the people who make TO DO Lists in order to get your things done? If you answered YES, then it is a fair bet that your to do list is getting longer by the day and it seems that there are some things that never get done. I am here to change that by introducing a new concept – A Not To Do List! Make a Not To Do List This is the true secret of getting things done! Instead of making a list of things that you want to get done, sit down every evening and make a list of the things you want to avoid doing the next day.

The chart below shows the savings rate (as a percent of disposable income) and the fluctuations we have seen in the last decade. by Jason Kamen Relaxation is an important and strived for state for most humans. After a long day of working, it is necessary for people to unwind with some kind of relaxing activity. Each individual has their own idea of a relaxing set of activities, but most people agree on what is relaxing and what is not. There are many complex ways to relax, but an easy method of relaxation involves just thinking. If you are in a comfortable position and setting, taking a long time to think about your situation and life in general can be quietly stimulating.

Yesterday, serendipity brought me from my research on artificial intelligence to the expression “intellectual technologies”, quoted by Nicholas Carr in a recent article . Nicholas Carr explains that this expression was used by sociologist Daniel Bell to describe the tools we humans have developed to increase our mental abilities: reading, writing, calculation, to name only a few. Behaviorist approaches such as organization methods, communication and group interaction practices are other examples, I think.

Tasks lists can be super helpful for creative firms or creative departments (e.g. art departments, interactive agencies, internal marketing or communications) to get more done, manage processes better and to get better information on their work (including tracking billable hours). They can also kill well meaning attempts at implementing project management. People usually get tripped up by making task lists overly detailed, trying to map every single step in a process.

“Structure is now the big fetish for Tai Chi and other internal training. But that’s taking the finger for the moon because any structure is tension, while the whole point of the training is to shed tension and relax. It’s true that in the early stages, a few straight-forward postural basics are used to prime the pump and set the stage. But those structural basics are a form of (controlled) tension, so even that is playing with fire.

Collectors, yes, collectors. That is what we all are when we start out with Getting Things Done (GTD) or any other productivity method. We collect everything around us and put it on our task, project or someday/maybe list. And this is not a bad thing, but it is just the beginning. Unfortunately many of us just stop at this stage.

This week on the Geek Dads @ Home podcast, we regretfully announce the (hopefully temporary) departure of Scott Jangro, a mainstay of the program since the third episode. Scott’s a busy guy, which we can certainly respect, and we sincerely hope that he’ll pop in to join us whenever his schedule allows. So, like Joe says in the first minutes of this episode, “and then there were two…”. Joe and I begin by talking about our plans for taking the podcast forward by having special guests on a regular basis.

For my first post on Make and Takes, I thought I’d start with something near and dear to my heart: Productivity . Don’t get me wrong, I’m probably the worst procrastinator I know so, unfortunately, “productivity” is a topic that I’ve been forced to become very familiar with. Listed below are some of my favorite free productivity tools and tips that have helped me be a bit more productive: Remember the Milk : this simple task management tool (aka glorified to do list manager) is great at organizing your everyday tasks.

Although our likely downsize move from our present home is at least a couple of years away, I am already spending time thinking about it . This includes appreciating the many financial benefits of downsizing . One of the first and most difficult steps to take in preparing to downsize is getting rid of the extra stuff. Baby boomers have lots of it. We don’t need much of the stuff we have collected now and we surely won’t need it (and can’t fit in) into a smaller home.

Don’t let you Face Painting or Children’s Entertainment business down by not following up on each lead with a solid system. And don’t be one of those business owners who receive a call from an interested customer, deal with the enquiry and never do anymore than that!   This is where you can excel above the competition with an outstanding sales process behind you. It’s wise to remember that peoples’ buying decisions differ vastly and it could take a number of contacts between you and the prospective customer to secure the booking for a party or event.

A few months ago, my ex-mother-in-law gave me her old Kindle when she upgraded to the new model. The first book I downloaded on it was last year’s Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, The Short, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz. I enjoyed the book tremendously, and had a life-altering experience while reading it on the Metro-North train and in downtown Starbucks. No one noticed what I was reading . This was incredibly disorienting.

The mind is disorganised and that’s just the way it works. Brains are not designed to create order in your life. They need some help. How many of these statements apply to you? You think about something that needs doing, then forgot about it a few minutes later. You put small objects down in the house such as car keys or glasses and cannot find them a few hours later You are introduced to someone and then forget what their name is You say yes to lots of things and find that the day is
