Oooh – project management. It is interesting to talk about project management and know about it.  Isn’t project management just organizing your little work to get the big work done?.  Isn’t project management really just a series of events to create some thing, by some point, way off in some hazy future? Not really.

Defining projects will give us clear picture about project management.  As per the definition a project is completing a task in a time bound manner. In practical terms, the goal of a project is to meet the requirements of the mission of the project customers.
A set of activities which are not part of our regular day-to-day works but forms the basis to create something constitute project. Always unique product or service is generated by execution of a project. An example to better understand about project is creating and developing the code for a game software. Where as the maintenance and operation activities are manufacturing of CDs, internet delivery and customer support

The technical requirements and sanctions, project deadlines and its budgets are the important terms and conditions to be accepted by the customer.

The United States of Project Management

In my project management seminars I like to say that this point in the room represent our current state; this is where our organization is today. We have some opportunity that we’d like to seize. We have some problem that we’d like to solve. Or there’s technology that has leapfrogged our current equipment so we need to improve our technical attributes. Where we are now is our current state.

Then I’ll stroll to a distant part of the room. This new location represents where we want our organization to get to. This describes our desired future state. Can you imagine how great our organization would be once we reach this destination? Can you imagination the problem solved, the seized opportunity, or the new technology and how it makes our business better? This spot represent our desired future state.

As you know projects are short-term endeavors to create a unique product or service. Projects are out of the normal duties you do as part of your operations. Projects are constrained by time, cost, and scope — and other constraints such as regulations, resources, or even vendors.

The time, cost and scope becomes constraints for all projects as per the Iron Triangle of project management. If one angle of the project is out whack the whole project suffers.

There are five process groups through which all project phases has to pass and they are initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. There are inherent key activities in each individual project groups which renders successfulness of the project. I believe the most important group is planning. Projects will not be successful if planning is not up to the mark.
The fundamental concepts of how to operate projects, different constraints and challenges to be faced by every project manager were discussed in this introduction to project management. On top of this strong foundation there are nine knowledge.

For now know this: The success of the project entirely depends up on the ability of the project manager to lead, manage, and motivate the project team to complete the project plan in time.  The project plan supports the vision the project manager has inherited from the project stakeholders. Project stake holder’s vision of the desired future project should be imparted on the vision of the project manager, other wise projects will be ineffective and lead to catastrophic failures.

Projects fail at the beginning, not the end.
