Working as a fleet manager is never easy; there is the headache of keeping track of all of the vehicles in the fleet whilst also trying to manage each individual staff member. Thanks to modern technological advances however, today’s fleet management solutions can reduce stress and make operations far more efficient. GPS or global positioning systems have been instrumental in the development of fleet management tools, unlike GPS devices in normal cars, business GPS can give directions but also track the vehicle, its speed and direction and highlight important maintenance dates. The subsequent benefits consist of better operability, increased fleet awareness and greater levels of efficiency.
One of the major benefits to these types of systems is that they allow a manager to have a complete understanding of the exact location of every single vehicle. Understandably this allows for easier personnel management as any workers who are either driving in a dangerous way or are using a company vehicle for unauthorised purposes can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Additionally, by having information on the driving habits of workers, it is possible to find wasteful drivers and give them instruction of how to drive in a more fuel efficient manner, for instance, by reducing speeding and idling time.
GPS fleet management tools also aid in the completion of administrative tasks. The result of this is that less man hours are spent on tasks such as compiling fuel sheets meaning that their time can be better spent elsewhere improving the profitability of the business. Some systems even have the option of providing the management with details of any particular vehicles relevant maintenance dates, ensuring that MOTs, services and oil changes are never missed; the result being a better maintained, and hence more fuel efficient fleet. Many of the most advanced systems are able to be connected to the vehicle’s engine management system meaning that if any problem does occur whilst in transit, the headquarters are notified immediately, reducing the chances of further damage being done to the vehicle.
The GPS device that comes as part of a fleet management system in many ways resembles the little black box recorder in aircraft. This can be especially useful if an accident does occur. By having a detailed record of the vehicles position, speed and direction, making insurance claims is made that much more efficient and detailed. This type of function is increasingly important in a world gone mad with liability claims.
Additionally though, with the implementation of GPS vehicle tracking devices other benefits soon become evident. One of these benefits is the money that will be saved in insurance premiums. Insurance companies are quickly realising that an accurate GPS system will reduce instances of driver misbehaviour and will also aid the police in the tracking of stolen items. Subsequently premiums are often dropped for companies with GPS vehicle tracking; in some cases the saving can be as much as thirty percent.
Understandably these reasons have led many managers to implement GPS technology. They do not only make life easier, but help in giving both managers and workers a simpler work life. With all the benefits, the costs of installation are soon recouped leading to a more efficient and hence more profitable business.
