The FIRST Robotics Competition, FRC, is an international robotics competition for high-school-aged students involving over 1,300 teams, 35,000 students, 40 regional competitions with a championship event held inside the Georgia Supper Dome. FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an organization, founded by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway Personal Transport, dedicated to inspiring young people to become science and technology heroes.

This year competition, FIRST Over Drive, had six robots racing around a 27’x 54’ race track while trying to coral and hurdle 40” balls, which weigh about 10 pounds, over a 6’ high bar. So, students were to build and design robots that manage this task within 6 weeks.

One of the aspects is software that ensures correct robot driving. Instrumentation ModelKit was used to design custom dashboard to monitor the state and nature of the system.

Joshua Lynn, Engineering Mentor of the 423 SEC Robotics Team,

“We had a very specific need and no ability to code the graphics to accomplish what was required to make one aspect of our control system interactive. Thanks to the Instrumentation ModelKit we were able to build, tweak, refine and implement the graphical representation of our system we need to make interactive without writing a single line of code! This was key to our success because we had other code that was essential to write or the machine would not function.”

And all team’s effort was awarded and honored by the judges:

“There’s no mayhem in this robot because it uses innovative software to interpret commands and make smart decisions. Their clever design has added the intelligence of a “5th” player to the drive team.”

The advantages of time management include reducing stress, gaining time, reducing avoidance, while promoting reviews and eliminating cramming. Another advantage is that managing time helps us to stay motivated while we avoid procrastination.

The trick to successful time management is setting up goals that work, while having an awareness of those goals and prioritizing your list of goals. When you set up an effective time management plan, you are growing and upholding a personal commitment to yourself, with the ability to be more flexible.

When you have a great time management plan, you are giving yourself an individual chance to, to generate a timetable that works to suit your busy caseload. When you create a good plan, you will soon find time to do all the things that matter most to you in life. In addition, when you have a good time management plan, you are saving your health.

Plans have a schedule timed, which includes all the activities you are responsible to handle. Your Master Timetable should include all the most important activities you are responsible to handle. It is important that you modify this schedule according to your time changes. When you set up a Master Timetable, you will need to list the priorities first, and work your way down to the least important tasks.

It is important that you follow as you write the tasks first listed. In other words, if you state on your Master Timetable that you need to write up some documents for your business, then do this task first and proceed to the next task. Try to avoid handling multitasking at once, unless it is your job and you are sufficient, and have laid out a time management plan.

You will also need to include meals, sleep, family, friends, yourself, and other tasks if you they are a part of your time management. By setting up a Master Timetable, you can work out your time scheme by working through the list on the time chart. Try to avoid skipping a scheduled task, or procrastinating, since this will only delay your plan.

It is important to keep in mind, that time is essential. When we waste time, we are wasting money. After you have laid out a suitable Schedule Timetable, you will soon learn that your motivation has increased, while your progress is moving ahead. In addition, you will soon find that your stress level is at a normal state. When you are not focused, or do not have a time management plan, you are only hurting yourself in the long run.

Most people without a time management plan often suffer with poor health, insomnia, and other discomforting issues. Some people even find themselves in court waiting for the judge to say “You are now divorced.” So you can see that time management is important since it affects everyone around you, but most of all, it affects you.

A final tip: Exercise and eating right plays an essential role to time management, since when you feel good, you work well under a management plan.

Letâ€™s face it, it is indeed difficult to handle an IT project. So many matters to consider like schedule to meet, budget allocation, constant inquiries from stakeholders, team to manage, constant changes, etc. Due to the complexity of an IT project, many Project Managers (PM) tend to focus on the system to build rather than at the â€œbig pictureâ€.

One duty of a project manager is to coordinate all of the knowledge areas throughout a projectâ€™s life cycle. These knowledge areas are: Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Human Resource, Communications, Risk and Procurement. I shall discuss individual knowledge areas in my succeeding articles. Project Integration Management cements all these knowledge areas in such a way that the project will be a complete success. Note that Project Integration Management is not the same thing as software integration management. The former is integration on the â€œbig pictureâ€ (or entirety of the project) while the latter is integration on the software components only.

Project Integration Management includes the processes and methods required to ensure that the various elements of the project are properly organized. Example of which is making tradeoffs among competing objectives. Project Integration Management is divides into three parts: Project Plan Development, Project Plan Execution and Integrated Change Control.

Project Plan Development is where developers plan what they will do with their IT project. Apart from planning the entirety of the project, developers also consider other important aspects [of the project], like: Historical information, Organizational policies, and Constraints and Assumptions. The result of excellent planning is the creation of a Project (Development) Plan. This plan is used as a main document that serves as guide and blue print in project execution and project control. This document coordinates all project planning documents and assists the PM in leading the project team and assessing the projectâ€™s status. Project Plan Execution is the primary process for carrying out the project plan and this is the area where the projectâ€™s budget and time is spent more. The application area or the project affects project execution because the products are produced during execution. The result of excellent planning â€“ Project Plan â€“ serves as input to Project Plan Execution. That is, Project Plan Execution is dependent on the result of excellent project planning, excellent creation of a project plan. Apart from this document, developers must also consider other important aspects at this stage like: Organized policies, Preventive action and Corrective action. The results of executing the Project Plan are Work Results and Change Requests. By executing the plan, results are recorded; however changes (proposed or brought about by the circumstances) cannot be avoided especially if these changes benefit the project. Here are a few samples of the tools and techniques used during project plan execution: (1) Work Authorization System â€“ a method used to ensure that people do perform their tasks, (2) Status Review Meetings – regular and scheduled meetings where the project team discusses all things related to the project, and (3) Project Management Software – a software used in assisting a team in managing their projects.

Integrated Change Control is concerned with: (1) controlling factors that create changes to ensure that changes are agreed upon by all stakeholders, (2) determining that a change has indeed occurred, and (3) managing the actual changes when they occur. During Project Plan Execution, performance reports and change requests are gathered also. Change Request is a kind of document where all proposed changes affecting the system being built are listed and described. After the changes have been studied, corrective actions will be implemented and lessons are absorbed.

Change Control System is a process that describes how official project documents and work may be changed. The process describes the personnel who can make changes. Also, the process includes a change control board (CCB), configuration management, and a process for relaying the changes. The CCB is a group of people tasked to approve or reject changes on a project. They provide guidelines and documents for change requests, evaluate then and supervise how these changes are to be implemented.

Configuration management makes sure that all products (e.g. required documents) and their descriptions are correct and complete. Configuration management personnel identify and document configuration requirements, control changes, record and manage changes, and check the products to verify conformance to requirements.
