Some of us are blessed with an internal alarm clock. A little voice that wakes you up two minutes before your alarm goes off. This may be a blessing if that little voice also alerts you ten minutes before your son’s soccer game or before the school bell rings. However I don’t have that blessing.

Of course I have the internal ability to wake up 30 minutes BEFORE I have to wake up after only five hours of sleep. Unfortunately that alarm doesn’t seem to carry over into the waking hours. A thirty minute heads up would be handy.

Not having that constant heads up, instead, I wear the super mom cape as I leap over shoes, bags and the cat in a flurry of movement. Knowing full well that the school bell is going to ring in ten minutes and the drive is a minimum of 11 minutes and three seconds if no one is in the cross walk and that light isn’t red. Of course, I will have to drive laps to locate a place I can stop to let my son in. All the parking spots are taken by those nannies with an internal clock.

I thought I had the alarm clock before I had children. As a professional Nanny I was never late for a soccer game, a music lesson, or birthday party. It turns out there are two types of internal alarm clocks. The one reserved for those of us who don’t have children under the age of 18. This one allows you to roll out of bed just before your alarm goes off after a night of 8 hours of restful sleep.

Then there’s the other alarm clock. The one called the mom alarm clock. This internal alarm wakes you up at three minutes before the baby needs to be fed, or two minutes before your toddler wets the bed, or 8 minutes before your five year old wakes up with growing pains. Sometimes these alarms are all in the same night. The mom alarm clock results in a pure hatred of the real alarm clock that wakes you up at 7 am as the children are peacefully sleeping telling you to start your day.

Luckily I have some other time management tips under my cape to keep me on time and organized as a mother. Despite the internal mom alarm clock working against me at night, my children make it to their soccer games and birthday parties, usually with the present and cleats in the bag. Was that the blue bag or the red one?

At last you are now in college! Only a few more years and the career you have been dreaming to achieve for years is already within your grasp.

However, the path is not easy and wreath with beds of roses. Lack of financial means to pay for your tuition, books and other necessary expenses can be an aspect to make your college student life miserable. Of course, you can get a part time job to and support yourself, but it will be precious time away from your studies.

You need accomplish also other college activities in successfully finishing your course. Notwithstanding old and new friends which will surely invite you to social events.

Well then, you need to hone up your time management skills and draw up a time management calendar. Having a Calendar of your activities will help you get through the difficulty of balancing your time between study and work, extra-curricular and social activities with friends.

More and more State Universities and Community Colleges are aware of the fact that college students have to work in order to survive and finance their college education. Because of this insight, these schools adjust their class schedules to meet every students needs.

However, administrators and advisors in the office find a hard time of scheduling and managing classes for working college students. This is because there are too many people to schedule and manage and few people to draw up the class schedules.

College working students like you who practice effective time management strategies can be a big help. You can assist university and community colleges administrators in drawing up class schedules that are effective for working students. Professionals at college need your definite schedules so that they can draw up a fair enough class schedules.

You can work out by yourself an efficient time management schedule, which takes into consideration your studies, and part time job schedules. In the end, with an effective time student calendar time management plan, you also save money.

Here is a great method of setting up your calendar of time management schedule:

1. First off, you must have a semester calendar. Universities and other colleges provide students with blank semester calendars. You can obtain one through online or create one according to your own liking.

2. In the semester calendars, enter your class schedules, project due dates, registration dates and other important dates. These important dates may come from your class syllabi and the school timetables provided in their brochures and announcements. Enter each date as you find them into your semester calendar.

Set up your own due dates for each phase of a big project, like term papers and projects. You can also add personal commitments to social and personal events

Maintaining a semester calendar as your time management method will give you a view of what commitments you need to fulfill. It will help you plan before a given schedule. This way, you will avoid last minute disasters.

3. You can also set up a weekly planner. There are available weekly planners provided by institutions you can obtain them online or get them at the registration office during enrollment. If you want to, you can also buy or create your own.

In the weekly planner, you need to enter your regular class schedule and other obligations on a weekly basis, like work, club or church meetings and assembly.
Make it a point that you insert ample time for review and reading before and following each class lecture you attend.

Take note of it in your planner. If you are wondering the enough time to put in for a review, have a general rule to plan two hours of study for each hour a lecture transpired.

Plan your regular time off from work and school. Enter bed and wake up times in your planner. Meanwhile, for projects, exams and other personal commitments, leave off blank slots

4. Tally out your weekly planner and semester calendar every Friday night or late afternoon. This will enable you to check out the things you have accomplished for that week and adjust on the activities that you still need to do for the following week.

Incorporating these other commitments can be done by placing them in the blank time schedule you have on your weekly planner. Then add new items you are committed in for the incoming week. Enter new things and schedules as new obligations, commitments and engagements come up.

You can have your weekly planner to check out before saying your affirmation to a commitment or engagement. If you find you have a previous entry on the said date and time, then it is best to turn down the invitation early on.

5. Every night create a daily “action list” for the following day. Use your weekly and semester calendar to do this. You can even put in categories to set your priorities straight.

Having a calendar for effective time management will reveal its importance when you reach your goals. The main purpose of maintaining it is that it will help remind you of the key goals you have set forth to achieve.

An effectime time management system can be adopted by anyone, at any time and in any situation whether it be work related or in a personal nature. Haphazard use of time is a “condition” suffered by the majority in all walks of life and until some time strategies are put into place, then effective time management will be only a “pipedream.”

As a web publisher, how I use my time is crucial. There was a time when I wandered through a day without an end target; my productivity was inconsistent and my stress levels often went “through the roof.” Can you identify with this? Here are some time management strategies I put into place which have served me well.

Good Time Management System

1. Making a list of things to do sounds like a well worn piece of advice. Well, in actual fact it is but let’s be honest, how many people simply ignore this little time effective gem, dismissing it before giving it a try. Making a to do list will give you a starting point to achieve your daily tasks. In effect, it can help neutralize procrastination before it sets in. It’s a “must do” time management exercise.

2. Writing a to do is one thing: prioritizing your list is another. Whether you write your list before going to bed ( highly recommended ) or first thing in the morning, list your tasks in order of importance.

3. One thing I found extremely powerful was completing my most difficult tasks first. As a writer, getting going is a tough thing to do. Writing articles for distribution is always hardest when you’ve already spent most of your day working. I simply prioritized my to do list by making my article writing the first item of my work day. It’s amazing how much more creative you can be when your mind is fresh. Writing is a chore most detest so why leave it until late in the day when tiredness is fast creeping in.

4. My work day used to finish whenever I completed my last task. Not anymore. Since prioritizing in order of importance, I am now very comfortable in holding over work to the following day. My work day starts at 8:00am religiously every day and finishes at 3:00pm. There are no exceptions. Working from home gives me a few advantages and one is my short commute to my office. During those seven hours I am focussed on productivity. After 3:00pm, it’s time to relax and get in a little recreation. An effective time management system for me has meant that I now have a good balance between work and play.

5. Creating a good balance is vital in maintaining low stress levels. I have trained myself in achieving this through a personal reward system. It’s my end-of-the-day goal. When the clock strikes three, I know I have been extremely focussed and productive. Now it’s time for my reward. This can be anything you want it to be. In my case, all I will say is that my house is just a short stroll to the local beach!

An effective time management system doesn’t have to be complicated. Don’t get hung up on the term time management. It is what it is. It’s what best suits your situation. Work out a plan for yourself then stick to it.

Professional project managers seeking certifications often discover that there remains so much more to learn about the subject. Some managers bank on the power of actual experience to strengthen their know-how; however there is something that the knowledge of structured approaches offers that mere hands-on experience can’t. Given the many learning opportunities available, how can program and project managers choose the right path that will further improve their skills?

Improvement and Skill Building, One Step At A Time

We, as individuals, need to employ the principle of continuous improvement. We have a broad culture of self-help and personal improvement, but not everyone has adopted the approach, and almost everyone could do even better. Just as so many practice personal self-improvement with the assistance of self-improvement books, motivational materials, attending motivational seminars, and more, it is virtually the same thing in the realm of project management skills. Advanced project management skills simply are taking everything we know, and then some, to the next level by becoming aware of new ideas and incorporating them into our own best practices.

Continuous Improvement

Let’s look at an example of how we can improve our ability to run meetings. We all know that the best way to do this is to practice, but, then again, it must be good practice. It is true that practice makes perfect, but “perfect practice” is what brings home the bacon. If we find ourselves in meetings on a regular basis, the best way to improve those skills and become a more “advanced project manager” is to try to raise our awareness, apply, adopt, and internalize one or two new ideas for continuous improvement on a daily basis.

For example, in meetings, setting a time limit for the meeting is a good technique. If you have not been doing that, or if you are not satisfied with how effectively you have been doing it, simply try to adopt this one single technique, master it, and integrate it into your common best practices. You might then want to tackle the idea of improving something like facilitation skills to enable everyone to contribute in an optimal way in solving problems in meetings. The key is to mark an area for improvement, to seek information on it to acquire one or two practical objectives, and to begin to put into practice.

Advanced project management training can help greatly in this process of personal and professional continuous improvement. Firstly, this will help us recognize and deal with different types of issues. It can heighten our awareness of what happens in certain situations and how to cope. It can help us to become aware and to develop strength at exercising many nuances of soft skills in our day to day project management practice.

Getting beyond meetings, project managers may identify any of the following areas and more for self improvement in the journey to more advanced project management skills:

1. Improve understanding of project and organizational finance.
2. Learn more techniques for communicating with people from different cultures.
3. Develop a deeper understanding of the unique perspectives of the various workforce generations that might make up your team.
4. Identify opportunities for leveraging outsourcing on projects, and also identify the risks and pitfalls of the outsourcing approach.
5. Adopt a more thorough understanding of issues surrounding telecommuting, and techniques and pitfalls in this evolving environment.
6. Build more advanced consultative skills for working as an external consultant, having worked within a single company for many years.
7. Become more effective at managing technical employees, a unique workplace challenge.
8. Broaden your scope of understanding of project management by expiring related methodologies, Bodies of Knowledge (BOKs), and frameworks, such as PRINCE2 or Six Sigma.
9. Seek to better understand the evolving field of knowledge management in organizations.
10. Develop a formal understanding of the strategic planning process, which provides the input to portfolio management and guide project and program selection.

This list of 10 possibilities for advancing one’s project and program management skills is actually a short one. When it comes to advancing project management skills, the sky is the limit, and the opportunities are virtually endless. There are a nearly infinite number of different types of challenges that a project or program manager faces, and whether by reading books, listening to selected speakers, taking classroom or online courses, and even hiring a coach, there is a lot of opportunity to improve, and many ways to do it.

Time management has become a big issue as we make inroads into the 21st. century. I know I have in place good time management practices yet, I cringe at a lot of my associates who seem to get by just acting on a whim. That was certainly me a few short years ago, until I discovered the benefit of time management.

What is it with advanced technology though; isn’t life supposed to be simpler now. Aren’t the amazing technical and non-technical advances we’ve made during the last fifty years supposed to decrease our lack of time? Aren’t we all supposed to be enjoying the benefit of time management? It doesn’t appear so. In fact, people seem to be busier than ever and employing good time management practice makes good sense.

The Benefit Of Time Management

Having a good time management structure will allow you to get your tasks completed on time, every time on a daily basis. More importantly, you’ll reach your minor and major goals by simply taking control of your own destiny.

The main benefit of time management for me has been an improved quality of life. I’m not kidding. Once I would simply put off tomorrow what I could do today but not anymore. And do you know what the best part is… it’s been such an easy transition. Sure there is a little bit of mind conditioning that’s needed in the early stages; the benefit of time management hasn’t been achieved without some mental preparation but what a transition it’s been.

My productivity levels have gone through the roof simply by applying a simple time management strategy. In a nutshell, I sat down and identified what was important and what wasn’t before any particular day and listed them in order of priority. Then with the important and day relevant tasks completed; most times, always before time: I would then assess the unimportant category and if there was anything on the list that could be taken care of today, it was. It’s just so simple.

The biggest benefit of time management for me has been the “death” of procrastination in my life. It’s gone… vamoosed…flown the coup! Good riddance.
It was my nemesis. I just had so many things to do but didn’t know where to start. So I didn’t. I left it till tomorrow; and the next day, and the next day. Does this sound a familiar story? I’m sure there are a few of you reading this who are having a little giggle at the moment.

The benefit of time management can’t be totally described in words but if I had to, I would say no doubt, the biggest benefit has been being able to control my own destiny. And you can do the same.

You might have often wondered why you always end up cramming in the last minute before your final examination. Your choir group is having practice on Saturday and your classmates have a group study planned at the same time.

Time management is essential for leading a successful college career. College life, as commonly known, is full of various surprises- lots of projects and homework, endless examinations, surprise tests and various other things with respect to academics.

Unlike high school, where you deal with the usual subjects each day, classes in college do not meet daily.

Here are a few tips that can help you minimize your stress while dealing with the different activities that you need to accomplish.

Tip #1 : Make a time chart
A Time chart is always recommended in time management. It helps you identify the best time for the different activities that you must do. For college students, the time management is a little trickier as they have fixed classes and free time in between.
A time chart can help give your schedule some structure based on the periods best suited for a particular activity. It also gives your schedule more balance. Certain students concentrate a bit too much on study and lose out on other activities such as sports, social events and recreation.

Tip #2 : Prioritize
One of the most important aspects of time management is prioritizing. It is difficult to decide which activity must be done first and which activity must be done later.
It is extremely important for college students to prioritize and select the activities to which they want to dedicate their time.
Incase you are unable to figure out what to prioritize, here are a few guidelines that can help you fix a schedule better.
• Reward. Find out the things that give you most joy. As you go through personal priorities, don’t forget to add personal fulfillment. There is always a satisfaction in doing something that you are good at. Do things that you know will give you positive results.
• Requirement: when your obligations get too much, stop right there and segregate your “chose to do” from your “must do.”
It is common knowledge that any college student will have obligations. You definitely do not have to take up responsibility for all obligations in the world. You need to ask yourself what are the tasks that you need to pursue.
• Results: while sorting priorities, find out those activities that give you favorable returns. Spend maximum time on those activities that require your greatest strength. Do not waste your effort and time on things that do not result in the desired outcome
College is the best period in which to experiment and try out new things. Prioritizing can help you focus on things that are important while enjoying new experiences.

Tip #3 : Do not over-commit
Exerting excessive effort on a particular activity can result in stress, pressure and burnout. Whenever you take on a particular activity in excess, you are denying yourself the opportunity of pursuing some other activity in the same time.

Tip #4 : Write down things
Writing things down is a time management technique that can help you remember the tiniest detail regarding your activities, especially during classes. Avoid the habit of memorizing. Often we forget older details when newer ones need to be remembered.

Use your skills in time management to get rid of unpleasant schedules and to enjoy your student life.

nursing time management skills

Nurses must be available 24 hours at health care organizations. This means that shift working is an absolute necessity. However, available nurses cannot be arbitrarily rostered to shifts. Nurse roster management must accommodate the constraints on shift allocation, and other kinds of constraints such as nurses’ entitlement to vacations and other kinds of absences.

Yet another problem is the skill mix of nurses. Nurses with the right mix of skills must be present during each shift. Otherwise, the quality of health care will suffer. On the other hand, employing too many staff to accommodate all contingencies will increase costs beyond acceptable levels. It is through effective nurse roster management that an attempt is made to meet both the quality and cost objectives.

The roster must be managed in a way that ensures reasonable allocation of duties among nurses. If too much burden is placed on a select few it can have two consequences. One, the quality of healthcare can suffer owing to the heavy and tiring workload on these few. Two, nurses are in high demand, and if they feel aggrieved with the rostering, they can look for other employment opportunities.

The Key Problem: Scheduling Nurses to Shifts

24-hour work is typically handled through three shifts, with a single nurse or group being assigned to a single shift. The typical shifts are early, late and night shifts of 8-hour duration each.

All the shifts are not popular shifts. In particular, the night shift is typically very unpopular, and is even considered to cause health problems. Consequently, available nurses must be rotated among different shifts in a way that all of them will be working equal numbers of popular, less popular and unpopular shifts.

The skill sets of the nurses must also be considered while developing the nurse roster. Then there is the problems posed by different kinds of absences, such as weekly offs, annual vacations, casual but expected absences and unexpected absences.

The nurse roster management system must handle all these requirements and generate rosters that meet the health care needs.

As can be visualized, nurse rostering is a complex exercise. You cannot expect to do a good job if you depend on a system of manual rostering, with a human scheduler developing the roster.

Typical Solutions: Nurse Roster Management Software and Temporary Staff

Nurse roster management software can be fed all the rules, constraints, details of available resources (such as number of nurses and their skill sets) and health care requirements. The system can also access the past rostering history of each nurse.

Based on the data thus made available, the nurse roster management system can work out schedules that not only meet healthcare requirements but also make best use of available nurses and skill sets.

Where available resources are not adequate to meet the requirements, the system can indicate additional staff requirements. It would then be possible to approach third party agencies that specialize in providing nurses (and other healthcare professionals) for short-term working. This is an expensive alternative, however, and the nurse roster management system would seek to minimize it.

Without good nurse roster management system, heavy recourse will typically be made to the third party agency services, increasing healthcare costs.

Homeschooling is simply not to educate your children at home and inculcate the best in them. It’s more than that! You need to plan and organize the curriculum for each of your child very efficiently and effectively. Moreover, there is very much a need of time management to cater the needs of each of your child. There are many factors that go into creating and maintaining a successful and effective homeschooling program. A poor time management can easily break the homeschooling program.

All of us want to accomplish great things via homeschooling – to see progress every day. None of us want to waste time looking for planning materials or completed work. Homeschooling education does not have the benefit of set schedules and time frames. Although this seems appealing to homeschooling parents, but mismanaged timing problems can become chaotic if not managed well in time.

It is very necessary to understand your schedule and how you manage to do things. Once you examine your way of working, it would be helpful to you as you can schedule your tasks with proper time management. Few important tips and suggestions are given to make your time management work effectively:

•    Try to develop a routine among your children by giving them a plan or task to follow. Once they start following a routine, time will be managed accordingly.

•    It is important to understand the subject that you are to teach your children. It helps to save a lot of time, which otherwise can lead to mismanagement and poor training of your children.

•    It is good to collect the resources and supplies well before time so that parents do not suffer later on, simply by collecting box of supplies when needed. This will also help you to focus your efforts on the subjects.

•    It is better to understand the learning style of each of your kid so that there is no mismatch that can lead to losing interest of your child in their lessons.

•    Try to avoid those things that can rob your time. Over commitment to outside activities, too many activities for your children, use of telephone are big time robbers. You can opt for alternatives to avoid such circumstances.

•    Keep your priorities in order and manage your time according to what can be accomplished in your life.

•    Your child is the source of evaluating and criticism that can help you to change the lessons and schedule when required. Students will tell you when lessons are taking too long, or when time could best be used on other tasks.

•    Make a planner that helps you to keep a track of everything that you do while homeschooling your children.

•    Time management is a proactive work. It is important to understand its value and make improvement before it runs out of your hands.

time management tips for teachers

High school student not just study and take classes. They also have to join school activities, socialize and do their homework. Apparently, they always have a lot of work in school and at home.

It is essential for high school students to be organized. If you are a high school student, it may seem like you are always running out of time and all you do is study and never get enough time with your friends and family.

Listed here seven tips for you to follow to make life of high school students easier and add extra time for you to be with your friends and family:

1- Set the target everyday – Before you go to bed, list down all the matters you want to accomplish on the next day. A ‘to do” list will help you to know what you are going to do and avoid doing unimportant tasks, of which will get everything done more efficiently and faster.

2- Prioritize your list of target – Once the “to do” list completed, try to prioritize the goals you want to achieve. Set your most important goal in life on top of your priority and your least important goals to down below on the list.

Be realistic on your list. It is better to list on what you need to achieve and not on what you want to achieve. If you have a long-term priority, it is probably best that you put it on the bottom of your list; you can always work on that tomorrow.

3- Utilize your spare time – As a high school student, sometimes you may not notice you have lots of spare time. Try to add up the minutes of the school bus ride to school and the school bus ride back home.

Use these times to create strategy of how to finish your homework effectively. By doing this, you will get an idea on what you need to do on your homework when you get home. This allows you to finish your homework faster and have extra time for other things.

4- Finding the right time – Sometime, students have specific time to study more efficiently. For instance, you can solve your math problems well on the afternoons; then do not wait until nighttime to do it. Mood is important here since mood can shifts immediately.

5- Taking notes – An effective way to study is to write down important notes. It is proven much better than just plain reading. Writing down notes has an effect on your mind. You can understand the topic more effectively and memorize it more effectively than by just reading.

Review your notes as your teacher might give a pop quiz on the next day. Reviewing your notes will help you be more prepared for the pop quizzes that your teacher may suddenly give.

6- Get adequate sleep – It is unhealthy trying to stress yourself out studying when you are supposed to be sleeping. It can bring ineffective results and unwelcome health problems.

If you need to sleep you have to sleep, do not force yourself to study if you cannot effectively study. If you try to study in this situation, you will most likely waste your time.

7- Keep your goals realistic – Trying to accomplish unrealistic goals can often result in failure and frustration. Setting realistic goals that is difficult and achieving it can give you self-worth and be proud on your achievements.

Just remember, everything you need to accomplish in one day is possible if you are organized and plan everything you do in a day.
