One of the annoying problems with our computer life is the Windows XP slow boot. It really gets into the nerve especially when you have an important meeting and you are already late but still, you find yourself in front of the computer screen, staring blankly at the message- ‘please wait while the Windows shuts down’. And you wonder how many meetings will you unable to attend just because of this irritating problem?

Unsystematic files. Unnecessary software. Unused network drives. Too many programs. Virus and spyware. These are the common reasons why your computer performs slower than before. You will know if you have Windows XP slow boot if your personal computer shuts down slow, hangs during shutdown or reboots instead of shutdown. A lot of people do not make any effort solving these problem because they get too intimidated and think that it needs the help of an expert to fix Windows XP slow boot conditions.

Actually, you can manually cure your problem with Windows XP slow boot. Here are some suggestions that you might find helpful: First, remove the programs from the startup that you think is unnecessary. Either you go to the Startup menu, delete them and make sure that the Preferences settings in every program, keeps them from booting up.

Remove spyware and adware. Make sure that you run a full adware and spyware scan if the computer is still running slow during booting. Another helpful tip is to run a virus scan. This is advantageous in the end to boot time. Use disk defragmentor to defragment the computer. Make the system do a boot defragment. This will put boot files close to one another on the hard disk when all the boot files are arranged closely, the system will start faster. This is the simple way to speed up Windows XP slow boot. You can find this in the accessories, in the system tools area. You can also use programs like registry mechanic to optimize your registry. Search the internet on where you can download this program. After doing these and you still have troubles in Windows XP slow boot, it is recommended that you take a back up and reformat the computer.

Moreover, these information might enlighten you with your Windows XP slow boot problem. First, open Windows Task Manager. If your computer was running smooth at one time, the problem must be inside the Operating System. All the resources being used by your computer is shown in the Windows Task Manager. To do this, just hold down Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Then, select ‘Open Task Manager’.

Then check the processes. Once the Task Manager is opened, click the Processes tab. Examine which of the processes are using the most resources by scrolling down. You may find that there are programs that are infected by a virus or a spyware, which you have installed without being aware of it.

Close the program that is stealing your resources. Close the programs that are using all your computer’s resources. But be careful not to close the program by clicking the ‘end processes’ option in the Task Manager because this will just make the computer stable. If you find some unfamiliar entries in the Task Manager that you find strange, this is a possibility that there is a virus present.

Look in the System Tray if you cannot find a program that is eating your resources. The system tray is located in the lower right hand corner of the computer screen. When you install a new program, this sets up a fast start option in the system tray. Right click the icons in the system tray and turn them off.

If you haven’t heard of jv16 PowerTools 2009, well… don’t beat yourself up. The software just hit the market. What’s so special about it then? First of all its freeware, secondly the company behind it is actually pretty good at cleaning Windows and fixing registry errors. They are called Macecraft and they are behind the jv16 PowerTools 2009, which for the last few years has become quite a brand. PowerTools Lite is actually a variation of jv16 PowerTools, as it uses the same engine and techniques to clean up the mess from your computer.

The thing you will love and hate most, at the same time, is the simplicity of the design. After the program launches and quickly scans over your PC, you are faced with literally only 2 buttons. One to scan and fix the errors, the other to undo the changes (restore backup). That’s it. Compare it with the tens of specialized tools that jv16 PowerTools (the commercial version) has and I’m sure that you’ll understand why the latter is not a freeware.

After the scan is finished though, things do get a bit more complicated. The errors found are nicely arranged in categories and you have the option to fix each of them individually, by category or as a whole. But that’s just the beginning. If you go to an individual error, you will see what degree of severity it has and if you right click any of them, you will be presented with a quite impressive array of options. On top of this, you will also find a search feature which if you really begin to work with, will tend to let you speechless. Seriously now, what other programs give you the option to search with a Perl query or using artificial intelligence.

Once you click the “Fix” button you will also be prompted to back up the changes you make. I strongly recommend that you use this feature. Messing with the registry can have serious consequences and although the engine behind PowerTools Lite is one of the better ones found on the market, it’s still a sensible thing to prepare for the worst.

To be honest, the software does offer an extended interface, which will give you more options before you start the scan, but the basic functionality is aimed strictly at cleaning junk files and fixing registry errors.

Speaking of the back-up feature, the software also has a neat interface to manage them, which you will surely appreciate if you are the type that likes to keep a tight lid over this sort of things.

task manager portable

Task Manager not opening?

Yesterday, my computer got some sort of virus from my friend’s portable device. I restarted my computer because it was hanging and after restarting, I deleted all the files I got from my friend.

Then when I tried to open the task manager to close down multiple programs at once, a window appears that says:

“Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”

But there’s only one account on my unit and it’s mine and it’s set to administrator already.

What should I do to fix this? Please, help!!! I just got this unit last month I don’t want it to be crapped up :( .

I’m trying to upgrade the free SP XP2…problems with task manager?

The computer says that the file is running or being used by another file. When I try to use the task manager, nothing happens. When I go through the START menu to search for the taskmgr, I find it, but when I try to open it, it flashes a message so fast that I can’t read it. I just installed a program that cleans the registry and has great virus protection. I have no idea what else to do. The only reason I need the XP2 is to download Itunes, which says I need the upgrade. Someone please try to help!!!

What do you think about creating shareware software to be sold online through a microsite and download sites (twocows, download.com, etc…)? Is it a viable and easy to approach way of making money (e.g. 10K a month)? I ask this, because everyone else seems to be betting on the Web 2.0 trend. Is there space for small nice little desktop utilities in 2006? (BTW, I’m an experienced developer)
