In the home based business arena there are two things that we must be mindful of. These are over working and under working. Is over working possible? I’m not talking about meeting deadlines and putting in a few extra hours to add the finishing touches. The over working I refer to is non-productive hours spent without an objective. We’ve all been there. Working away for hours and at the end of the day when we look back on our efforts we realized how little we actually accomplished. Under working can be a problem as well. This is described by not giving enough attention to areas of our business that could stand some improvement. We will look at over working and how a daily plan along with organization will make for a great work from home experience and include family as well.

Daily Goals and Objectives.

We all know the importance of goals and goal setting, but most of us set goals for our business or for certain aspect of our business. How many of us set goals for the day? Goals that when they are complete we actually feel that we have done something substantial. Many call this a To Do list. What should this list consist of? Well, if you are just starting your business, it should list out the setup processes that need to be done. Examples are setting up bank accounts, email accounts, getting your business plan together, products, and setting up your website. If all of these are completed you are now focused in on advertising and marketing. Once your objectives for marketing have been set, your focus should be on there effectiveness. Set out time everyday to gauge the effects of your marketing and advertising campaigns. Make sure you set aside time every day for your Research and Development (R&D). This helps to open your business to new avenues.

Are You Organized?

A larger part of home based business is organization. Making all aspects of your business work together makes for an environment of peace versus chaos. Work out a filing system that works for you. If most of your transactions are on line, make folders in your email account that relate to subjects such as business expenses, business bills, write-offs, etc. This helps immensely when you need to find something quickly. Physical folders can be made also if your business deals more with order forms. A file cabinet comes in handy. Have a spreadsheet with a running tally of your expenses, bills, etc. You will thank yourself at tax time!

Family Time.

When we are so focused on our task and objectives we sometimes forget why we chose a home based business in the first place. For some activities, its best that you have quiet; but with other activities, a little interaction won’t hurt. Figure out what those tasks are and allow that interaction. Also have set times during your day when it’s family time. This may be during dinner and an hour or two after that. If your children are school age, what would be better than doing your non attention grabbing task while they are doing there home work. This not only helps with bonding but will also teach your children a lesson in time management.

There really isn’t enough space to expand all of these concepts so your imagination will have to fill in the space for your business. However, you can see that with a few adjustments to your home based business you can create an environment in the home that balances your objectives, keeps you organized and allows for family time as well.

Professional project managers seeking certifications often discover that there remains so much more to learn about the subject. Some managers bank on the power of actual experience to strengthen their know-how; however there is something that the knowledge of structured approaches offers that mere hands-on experience can’t. Given the many learning opportunities available, how can program and project managers choose the right path that will further improve their skills?

Improvement and Skill Building, One Step At A Time

We, as individuals, need to employ the principle of continuous improvement. We have a broad culture of self-help and personal improvement, but not everyone has adopted the approach, and almost everyone could do even better. Just as so many practice personal self-improvement with the assistance of self-improvement books, motivational materials, attending motivational seminars, and more, it is virtually the same thing in the realm of project management skills. Advanced project management skills simply are taking everything we know, and then some, to the next level by becoming aware of new ideas and incorporating them into our own best practices.

Continuous Improvement

Let’s look at an example of how we can improve our ability to run meetings. We all know that the best way to do this is to practice, but, then again, it must be good practice. It is true that practice makes perfect, but “perfect practice” is what brings home the bacon. If we find ourselves in meetings on a regular basis, the best way to improve those skills and become a more “advanced project manager” is to try to raise our awareness, apply, adopt, and internalize one or two new ideas for continuous improvement on a daily basis.

For example, in meetings, setting a time limit for the meeting is a good technique. If you have not been doing that, or if you are not satisfied with how effectively you have been doing it, simply try to adopt this one single technique, master it, and integrate it into your common best practices. You might then want to tackle the idea of improving something like facilitation skills to enable everyone to contribute in an optimal way in solving problems in meetings. The key is to mark an area for improvement, to seek information on it to acquire one or two practical objectives, and to begin to put into practice.

Advanced project management training can help greatly in this process of personal and professional continuous improvement. Firstly, this will help us recognize and deal with different types of issues. It can heighten our awareness of what happens in certain situations and how to cope. It can help us to become aware and to develop strength at exercising many nuances of soft skills in our day to day project management practice.

Getting beyond meetings, project managers may identify any of the following areas and more for self improvement in the journey to more advanced project management skills:

1. Improve understanding of project and organizational finance.
2. Learn more techniques for communicating with people from different cultures.
3. Develop a deeper understanding of the unique perspectives of the various workforce generations that might make up your team.
4. Identify opportunities for leveraging outsourcing on projects, and also identify the risks and pitfalls of the outsourcing approach.
5. Adopt a more thorough understanding of issues surrounding telecommuting, and techniques and pitfalls in this evolving environment.
6. Build more advanced consultative skills for working as an external consultant, having worked within a single company for many years.
7. Become more effective at managing technical employees, a unique workplace challenge.
8. Broaden your scope of understanding of project management by expiring related methodologies, Bodies of Knowledge (BOKs), and frameworks, such as PRINCE2 or Six Sigma.
9. Seek to better understand the evolving field of knowledge management in organizations.
10. Develop a formal understanding of the strategic planning process, which provides the input to portfolio management and guide project and program selection.

This list of 10 possibilities for advancing one’s project and program management skills is actually a short one. When it comes to advancing project management skills, the sky is the limit, and the opportunities are virtually endless. There are a nearly infinite number of different types of challenges that a project or program manager faces, and whether by reading books, listening to selected speakers, taking classroom or online courses, and even hiring a coach, there is a lot of opportunity to improve, and many ways to do it.

Is a retail management position a good way to get experience learning management skills?

that one can use to get something “better”?
And how long would one think it would be advisable to stay there for such a reason if it is? (i.e. how long in having it before quitting for that better job?)

yes…but try not to be fooled by some retailers rhetoric..I worked as a manager for 2 long years in retail….being a salaried employee was awful…getting the same pay for 40 hours as for 60 hours…but you will learn some valuable people skills…dealing with the public can really be rough…I deal with the public 6 days a week in my current position(not retail) and those people handling skills can come in handy

introduction to time management

You have completed your high School, cleared your college entrance examination and selected the University of your choice to attend. Being an athlete you have the privilege of obtaining a scholarship.

The new college campus makes you very excited and nervous and hesitant to take the next step. First you meet your coach and the concerned person tells you to report for practice early next morning.

After meeting the coach you proceed straight to the class room. On the first day it was not so bad, only an introduction to the course and subject plan and not assignments and formal lectures.

On the next day you get up early to start practice, fully refreshed and all set to begin coaching. The coach gives a strenuous workout, but it is natural for any coach to give the beginner a tough time.

After completing your training you head to your dometry to get ready for the class. A shock awaited you when you stepped into your class room. The professor who seems very nice was a terrible nightmare. The professor asked the students to write an essay within 1500 words with small deadline, and you assumed you could complete it. The next class was worse.

After completing the class, you meet the other athletes on the field and make friends and everyone was busy discussing about the party that night and inviting each other. Of course to make an impression and to have their approval you oblige.

At the party the thought of the essay with the 1500 words keeps lingering in your mind. You think you still can handle the deadline which is not very short.

At the end of the party you retired to your dometry very tired from exhaustion of the day there is yet something else awaiting. Your roommate is celebrating another party in the room with loud music hindering you from studying or sleeping, making the whole room a total mess.

You wake up stressed and tired from the previous night. You land up late for practice on the field .It was the most terrible performance in you whole life time and added to that the thought of the 1500words essay comes back to your mind. The coach was very annoyed at you for the terrible performance and he insisted that you remain and clean up the locker room.

Finally after completing the cleaning of the locker room you rush to the first class of the day though late. As a punishment the Professor does not permit you into the classroom because you are late.

The terrible thing was that the professor was mentioning some hints regarding the essay to be written. You decide to fail will result in the cancellation of the scholarship.

There may be no way out but still this is very common for college athletes. Advanced time management skills are needed for college students Getting admitted in colleges is very easy. But the difficult part is trying to cope with the extra curricular activities without ignoring your studies.

Management of time for studies and co-curricular activities for college students is very difficult but for an athlete it is even more difficult because he has to undergo stressful training session and even cope up with his studies in order to get their scholarships.

Due to the new levels of competition, there is a sudden increase in the responsibility of college students. They have all started training harder. You could have been the best athlete in high school, but in college many athletes will beat your record. Hence you will have to study and train harder to keep fighting.

Some tips for management of time for college athletes:

Study time should be allotted in your schedule because it is not as easy as studying in high school. It is a lot harder in college due to limited time.

Speak to your professor about your time table and they might consider in shifting you to a different class with the same subject on different time.

By developing a good time management skills, you can train, play matches, study, socialize and attend to your personal life activities with enough time for each.
