Your biggest advantage in home business could become your worst enemy as well, that is absence of boss and you need to do your own time management. For instance, you think that you have all the time in the world and you will be able to do everything under the sun within the day. Alternatively, you just relax too much and do not put enough effort, like the hare in the famous hare and tortoise story.

I have identified the major problems that takes away your time from you and then prescribed the solution. In terms of problems, the first problem is there is no Boss. After the end of the week, no one is coming to you and asking to look at the time sheets. Your mind start thinking that it can take a break as long as it wishes. The second biggest problem is lack of co-operation from Family. Your family members see you at home. They just now think you are there. You keep on getting requests like pay the bills; pick up the kid from the school and an endless list.

Third biggest problem is lack of discipline. Because you don’t have to enter office at 8:00 am, you slowly start waking up late and late from bed. As Einstein said, “The universe and human stupidity are endless”.
After identifying the problem it’s the time to overcome them and take control of your own time. The first step is goal setting. Set your yearly goals. Break them up into monthly, weekly and daily goals. You have to achieve those small goals to become successful in your home based business. Remember, every great journey starts with a single footstep. Secondly, you will have to become really your that boss. You have to be your own critique. For half an hour in the day, think you are your own boss. Look at your own work from a different perspective. Set up a reward and punishment schedule. Use Outlook express or other software. For me a pen and paper works very well.

And finally communicate with Family. Make a promise that you will enter your home office at 7:00 sharp in the morning. Tell your family that you need uninterrupted time from here to say 5:00. Tell them you will be a perfect family man after this time, but if they disturb you during this time. And the fourth step is, prepare the daily routine beforehand. Before you go to bed, prepare a list of tasks you want to do. Then sleep. While sleeping your brain will think about it and next morning, you will feel pushed to complete the work. Finally take one day in a week break. Just indulge yourself with the family in exciting activities that just takes away your mind from the reality.

improve time management skills

Each of us has our own reasons for continuously working to improve both in our personal lives and our professional or work-a-day life. You might be trying to earn the next big salary increase. You could feel that learning a new technology will help you over a particularly weak spot in your skills. Whatever the reason, have you extended your thinking to see that when you improve, you increase both your productivity and your time management skills set?

In his Great Little Book on Mastering Your Time, Brian Tracy states that, “Personal development is a major time-saver. The better you become, the less time it takes you to achieve your goals.”

How true, how true! Remember back to when you were fresh in the job you have now. Can you remember how long it took you to establish a productive routine! There were forms to create, contacts to establish, systems to discover and confidence to be gained!

Once you have mastered all of the above, i.e., mastered your time, did you stop there? Many people do! Sadly, when we reach a comfort zone where things are going smoothly and we know both the ins and outs of our profession and also where we fit in with respect to all of the players, we begin to coast!

Is this what you want – to coast? Coasting can guarantee dying in your present job or relationship regardless of how great you think you are currently. We get stale! We stop going that extra mile and worst of all, we stop having fun!

If we don’t stay on top of this concept, we will lose the fresh edge that got us to the top initially, and once it’s gone, it’s really tough to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps to regain it! At this point, time management goes down the drain?

This week, look for ways to spice up your personal and professional development strategy. If you do not have a personal or professional development strategy, create one. If you have one in place, give it a fresh look and see if you can tweak it to become better. Be creative, bold and daring! Look beyond what classes you will take or which books you will read and peer into the unknown, whatever the unknown is for you! Can you see how you will improve your time management skills set if you expand your mind or use some development strategy to upgrade your thinking? You’re the only one who can answer this question. See what there is to discover this week and have fun discovering it! Enjoy your week!!

In this global fiscal crisis, many business owners and executives are looking for ways to maximize organizational performance and cut costs at the same time.  While this is a very difficult task for most CEOs, the truth is these goals can be accomplished with relative ease once we stop relying on technology and start focusing on our internal processes and leveraging existing assets.  According to business intelligence software vendor SAS, the number two reason why performance programs fail is failure to adopt best practices.  But what are performance management best practices and why are they so valuable?  By definition, they are techniques or methodologies that, through experience and research, have been proven to reliably lead to desired performance results.  This article discusses the value of applying performance management best practices and leveraging your existing assets for maximum performance.

Most companies have some form of performance management processes in place.  It’s common to baseline performance, apply a set of performance metrics, identify goals and create a plan to reach them.  But where most companies fail are in the intangible processes, such as gaining employee acceptance and buy-in, aligning performance to organizational objectives, choosing the right business intelligence tools, and so forth.  It’s these intangibles that can bring performance initiatives to a halt.  If you simply address these intangible processes while implementing your existing performance initiatives, you can significantly increase your performance success through these tough financial times.

It has become our business culture to invest large sums of money on business intelligence tools and high priced consulting for managing data and key processes that drive organizational success.  We have become so reliant on these products and services as solutions that we have failed to understand the true cause of organizational breakdown, and that is our internal processes, most specifically, how we approach managing performance within our organization.

You’ve probably heard the saying ‘what gets measured, gets done’.  Well, that’s true.  But equally true is HOW it’s measured determines HOW WELL it gets done.  You can use all the industry standard metrics you can find, but if internal processes aren’t in place to educate and motivate those being measured, or if different departments are executing the same functions differently, the systems you have in place will not drive peak performance.  Metrics quantify high performance, but it’s the best practices and processes that get you to that level.

So how are organizations supposed to adopt performance management best practices when there is not a comprehensive set documented and integrated into a logical, effective framework?  Lifecycle Performance Professionals, identifies 35 best practices that greatly impact the success of any performance initiative, and has an excellent, low cost tool that evaluates an organization’s approach to performance management and measures how well they utilize performance management best practices throughout the entire organization.  It is called the Organizational Performance and Best Practices Analysis and it maps these best practices to people, processes and systems and provides a custom step-by-step roadmap detailing your critical path to success.  By fully understanding where your organization utilizes best practice processes well, you can leverage those strengths and resources to departments that need them the most.  You can learn more about it at The Performance Portal.

We’re all feeling pressured these days. We’re making do with less. We’re on call 24/7 Our email inboxes are overflowing

So – no surprise – we’re getting bombarded with guides to manage our time more efficiently. Visit any bookstore and you will find dozens (maybe hundreds) of titles with “time” in the title. Surf the Internet for “coach” and you’ll soon learn the truth: more people hire coaches for time management than for any other reason.

So why are so many of us still feeling frazzled and frustrated? Most time systems offer band-aid solutions to the life equivalent of a broken leg…or patching a flat tire with chewing gum. For real time management change, you have to dig deeper. Here are 10 reasons most time management systems fail — and what you can do instead.

(1)”One-size fits all” systems.

Your life is unique – so why should your time management system be like everybody else’s? For example, one “expert” advises all her clients to focus on marketing during the day. Gym and grocery-shopping should be reserved for evening, she says. But some people actually work better in short bursts of purposeful activity. They thrive on interruptions. Others need a solid block of time or they accomplish nothing. Which are you?

(2) Ignoring your motivation.

Does this scene sound familiar? You visit friends who have teenagers. After dinner the teens are supposed to take out the garbage. “We’re too tired,” they protest. “Can’t it wait till tomorrow?”

The parents almost give in…till the phone rings. After a brief conversation, the teens are headed out the door: “A party! Just a few blocks away – let’s run!”

We haven’t changed much, whether we’re 14 or 64. When we’re highly motivated, action seems effortless. Somehow we manage to get everything done.

(3) Waiting to reward yourself till you’ve “earned” it.

Experienced trainers and psychologists recognize that offering an unexpected treat can be a powerful motivator. Feeling deprived and resentful will be counter-productive. Often when you’ve been working hard to solve a knotty problem, the solution will come only when you allow yourself to take a break.

(4) Focusing on task instead of purpose.

Time management systems often focus on scheduling and organizing tasks into charts, folders and lists. But you take control over time when you ask, “Why is this item on my To Do List?” and, “Do I really need to do this?”

Over and over, I’ve heard people discover the big secret: Often when you ignore an incoming message or call, the problem resolves itself. And when you skip a meeting, the world doesn’t come to an end.

Of course, you have to be careful. You can’t ignore messages from clients (most of the time). If you work for a company, the decision to skip meetings can be hazardous to your career.

But I urge everyone to ask. “Pete” was supposed to send his department head a monthly report. He would need at least a day to compile the numbers. One day Pete forgot to send the report…until the middle of the next month. He realized he hadn’t gotten a follow-up warning or reminder. So next month, he deliberately ignored the report. Nobody noticed for the next year, and by then Pete had been promoted: he was known as a productive go-getter around the company.

(5) Listening to the critics.

“Connie” was feeling depressed: her boss had labeled her “disorganized.” True, her desk was cluttered and she sometimes came back late from lunch. But Connie ran a complex department and she rarely missed a deadline.

Connie’s challenge was to talk to herself encouragingly. She can’t give in to calling herself “lazy” and she can’t afford to accept the “disorganized” label.

To take charge of time, begin with the way you talk to yourself. Name-calling and insults won’t help. Feeling strong and powerful is the first step to solving your own unique time challenges.

Google was in a tight corner with complaints regarding its Gmail system on the rise.Users had a reason to complain because the Gmail operating system tended to become unmanageable when it came to handling complex and more advanced tasks. To fill the gaping hole Google’s Gmail team has eventually come up with a solution suited to both sides involved.

The news is that Google has added a new tool to its online suite of applications; It is a Task Manager for its mail services, which, if reports are to be believed, will allow users to operate their agenda and Gmail lab applications more efficiently and conveniently.

Google has gone a step further by adding instructions to familiarize users with the new application. To make the task manager start working you first enter your mail box and select the settings at the top; Then you click the Labs option and allow the new feature to appear at the top. Later on you select “Enable” and “Save Changes”, so that your task gets remembered and the task manager kicks in.

The most interesting part of this new feature is that you get the option to customize your tasks list the way you want and to let them stay visible no matter what you are doing. So, without bothering about what activities you are performing while creating a task, you have the convenience of reverting back to it, and find it exactly as you left it. Additionally, this program makes available a plethora of tasks options, that further enhances your pleasant mailing experience. Should you feel that a particular task does not required to be saved by the program, you always have the choice to delete, move, indent, or un-indent it, etc.

The most versatile attribute of this new task manager is that it can easily convert all your mails into tasks; It enables you to read your mails, to click on them, and to do whatever you find necessary at a particular moment. Converting mails into tasks is a simple procedure; Just remember to select a message, click “More Actions” and then select “Add to Tasks”.

This last feature is indeed turning out to be the most admired one, and a majority of reports are acknowledging this fact. We can say without an iota of doubt that this new application of Google is by far the most important releases we have witnessed in recent times regarding email processes.

Tasks is a killer feature designed by Gmail Labs with which users can keep track of things that they need to do. Users can construct lists of items, set due dates and notes, and even add Gmail messages directly to Tasks. Tasks will be right there to address your needs when you integrate it with your Gmail account.

Possessing time management skills can be beneficial in all aspects of life. Not only are they essential when doing physical tasks or activities, but time management skills can also be helpful when spending time online.

As an increasing number of people begin to spend much of their time on the internet, the idea of putting that time to more efficient use becomes all the more important. Here are some great tips that can help you make each minute count online.

A good time management skill to develop, even while online, is learning how to be more organized. This might seem an obvious tip, but it is something that most people fail to make a habit of. Not being able to organize things can lead to a considerable amount of time wasted on finding things and remembering tasks. Developing good organizational skills, in itself, can be a great time saver.

Keeping organized online is a practice that can help you provide more time to spend on important tasks. One of the simplest ways to do this is learning to keep important website addresses organized. Surfing the net is faster and easier if you know where you are going. Less time is also spent on wondering what sites you need to visit.

If you already have a number of websites that you frequently go to and wish to return to on a daily basis, it is important that you always have a list of them with you. This list can either be in a document file that you save on your computer or a paper list that you keep in a safe place.

Better yet, you can conveniently organize these websites by using the bookmark feature of your PC browser. This way you can always access your bookmark sites every time you wish to visit them. You no longer have to spend time trying to remember them from memory.

Another good time management skill to develop online is by learning how to check your emails on a scheduled basis. More online time is spent browsing through emails, even those that prove to be useless. Without a schedule to follow, you can easily immerse yourself just checking your emails with complete disregard of time. Keep it a habit of giving a specified amount of time just checking up on your emails. Try to strictly enforce the schedule on yourself so that you don’t waste time solely on it while leaving other tasks behind.

Many individuals desire to know and understand some simple and effective time management techniques. The concept of “time management” is very often over complicated by many individuals. When this occurs, these people may cringe at the sound of this phrase. Electronic organizers, computer software programs, time spreadsheets – these are all extremely complicated means of effectively controlling your time, your schedule. In most cases, these are bought and used with all the best intentions, but quickly will gather dust in someone’s office somewhere. Here, I will share with you some simple and effective time management techniques that can help you take charge today!

Now, I am going to share with you a secret that most businesses who specialize in creating and selling time management tools do not want you to hear. The best simple and effective time management technique is implementing the use of a pen and a piece of paper! Yes, that’s right! The good old fashioned method of keeping track of time with a “To Do” list is the most effective means of appropriately managing your time! I mean, if you think about time organizers that are electronic based, they can be really complicated when it comes to running them, and finding files on them. Ultimately, you are actually losing time each day by using these systems rather than gaining time!

When it comes to electronic based organizers and handheld time management systems, you have to worry about supplying a steady stream of power to these units. That means that they chew on your electrical costs when they are charging, and they chew on your wallet a little when batteries must be bought for them. What happens if you have no access to power? What happens if that battery decides to give out in the middle of the day? I will tell you – your entire day will be lost and you will have no direction whatsoever! Why put yourself at risk for these situations to occur? Grab a good pen, some nice clean sheets of paper and be on your way!!!

One of the best investments that you can make is a small notepad and a pen that you can use to write in that notebook. Just in case the first pen runs out of ink, it is always great to have a backup pen. You should stick this notebook and these pens in your pocket so that you always have access to them. Throughout the day, as you get new ideas and commit to new things that will or may affect your time, you can simply jot them down in your little notebook! Now, don’t you think that is much easier than programming everything that affects your time into some handheld electronic unit? Plus, do you know how much those little organizers and even time management software programs cost? The notebook and pens you buy do not even cost 1% of what you will spend on these units! Don’t complicate time management, simplify it!

Time management is one of the skills needed for life. Hence, it is also termed as a life-skill. Right from the director of a company to a front-desk executive, time management plays a very important role. Managing time effectively brings order and discipline to our lives.

Time management, though is a life-skill, is a skill that needs to be learnt during the course of life. People are not born with this skill. As need arises, people learn this skills, most often, at times when things or situations start going out-of-hand. It is only in times like this that people realize the true value and potential of this skill.

Time management is not rocket science. It does not need a detailed study of your itinerary to see the time you have available and the time that you spend on various activities. Time management is a simple skill that teaches you how to practically schedule the time you have on hand so that you can properly plan and schedule your tasks and responsibilities accordingly. This skill teaches you to quickly analyze the time you have on hand and accordingly schedule your tasks for the day. It helps you make effective and efficient use of your time without over committing yourself, thus ensuring that you reach all the goals within a specific time period.

The first step in time management is to differentiate between “urgent” tasks and “important” tasks. Important tasks are those tasks that benefit you over a period of time and help you in attaining the goals you have set for yourself.

Urgent tasks are the tasks that you do for the benefit of others, which does not have a significant effect on helping you reach your goals. So which of these takes the upper hand? While deciding this, it is important to understand that not all “important” tasks are urgent and not all “urgent” tasks are important.

Effective time management help you focus and concentrate better on the task at hand. Let me explain how this is possible. It is human tendency to be confused when there is chaos and disorderly environment all around us. Time management brings in order and discipline to our lives which in turn helps us deliver 100% on every task. Rather than channelizing our mental energy in various directions, it helps us focus all our mental energy towards the task on hand thus improving our productivity and quality of work.

We perform a number of activities and execute various tasks during the course of our day. How many of us can account for what we did on a particular day? Maintaining records of what we do on a given day will help us understand for what, where and how we spend our time. This will give us an insight into the tasks we perform each day. This has been a revelation since it brings out the unimportant tasks that we focus on, thus, leaving back many other important tasks which are needed to help us reach our goals. The process of documenting daily activities will also help decide on what changes are needs and how they can be brought about.

To summarize, time management follows the age-old rule of “do the most important thing first”. Always prioritize your “important” tasks over “unimportant” tasks.

About the Author:

Let us consider an example. Assume you are working on an important board meeting report, it is unimportant to respond to emails. Hence, it is better not to respond before completing the important task if you take in consideration your
