What are PRINCE2 Courses?

PRINCE2 stands for Projects in Controlled Environments, version 2. It is a method of project management that was originally created in the late 1980s as a government standard for IT. However, it quickly became widespread both within and outside the IT industry and the second version, released in the mid-1990s, was designed as a more general system. Format of PRINCE2 Training

PRINCE2 courses focus on eight main processes, divided into 45 different sub-processes. Each phase has key requirements and goals, enabling easy evaluation and efficient distribution of resources. Unlike some other project management training methods, PRINCE2 courses concentrate on delivering goals rather than on activities and procedures. PRINCE2 has been described as ‘structured common sense’ – a way of formalising responsibilities, time-scale and outputs, and optimising resources, in the course of a project. There are areas it does not cover, such as budgeting, risk management and people management, and it is therefore better suited as an additional tool for those who already have some project management experience, rather than as a one-stop-shop for beginners.

For example, a broad outline for a software project might be:

2. Initiating project (IP): creating project plan

3. Design

7. Close Project (CP)

PRINCE2 Courses and Accreditation

PRINCE2 courses can help students to gain accreditation by preparing them to pass two exams: Foundation and Practitioner. Those interested may be able to study for the exams themselves, but many prefer to take a course in order to learn directly from an experienced professional trainer. The only requirement is a general knowledge and experience of project management.

The Foundation qualification entails a one-hour exam. The format is 75 multiple-choice questions, with a pass mark of 38 (51%).

The Practitioner qualification entails a three-hour objective-testing exam, consisting of nine 40-mark questions and with a pass mark of 180 (50%). To stay accredited, Practitioners must retake the exam every five years.

Due to the fact that so many organisations use PRINCE2 as standard, the Practitioner qualification may be a necessary job requirement for those who wish to project manage in certain environments. Those involved in a supporting role may find the Foundation qualification useful. Although many people may have been project-managing for years without such a qualification, it can be a very useful way to illustrate competence when changing job.

Every time a new selling season approaches, small business owners and managers need to take inventory and spruce up marketing blips that seem to appear and reappear in their daily promotional challenges.

Marketing legend, Zig Ziglar, characterized these blips as stinking thinking (ST) and recommended a regular check up from the neck up. Good advice to follow.

Here are some of the small business mental roadblocks that may need a lube and oil change:

ST: Anyone who can fog a mirror is my designated target market. Deep six this thought once and for all. Aim your advertising at everyone and you will hit no one. Your ads will blow in the wind but you will still have to pay for them.

ST: I have been in business in these parts for XX years. Folks around here know where I am and what I sell. Get real. There is hardly a square mile of our fruited plain where 50% of the residents are not moving in, moving out or moving on. A good many in your market area do not know anymore about your business than they do about your competition.

ST: Customers are more likely to raise their hand and inquire when I leave the prices(s) out of my advertisement. Keep on walking west looking for the sun to rise!

Savvy consumers today do not take the time to play guessing games. What they will do is turn the page or the dial and you and your ad become history.

ST: My business is pretty much the same as most of my competitors. If you believe that, you and your marketing efforts are headed for some serious train wrecks. Get a grip.

Take the time necessary to clearly define what is unique and special about you or your business as opposed to your competitors. Itch your niche. State your case clearly and often: why anyone should buy your offering from you.

ST: If my ad is too specific, I am likely to miss someone who might have responded. Once again now: when you attempt to speak to everyone, you speak to no one and that is exactly who will respond to your ads.

ST: The only reason I ever advertise is to remind people that I carry a wide assortment and offer the best selection of widgets this side of Rotten Porch, Kansas.

If you are wasting your money using phrases like wide assortment or best selection, your trips to the advertising plate will result in consistently striking out. Avoid majoring in minors (meaningless words).

ST: If I list my price(s), my competitors will undercut me. Really! The only people you care about seeing or hearing your ad and taking note of your
price(s) are your target market prospects and customers. No one else matters!

ST: It seems to me that the only thing people in this market care about is price. You know why? Because almost without exception the larger advertisers (grocery chains, vehicle dealers, and big box stores) not only feature but consistently highlight price in bold type encased inside all manner of gaudy clip art. Pray that they never wake up and realize the error of their ways.

Your primary message should focus on what is in it for me (besides just price) to choose your offer over your competitors . . . today . . . or at least soon. Make that case and ad results will follow.

ST: The big boxes cram and jam lots of items and offerings in their ads. That strategy must work or they would not continue to do it. Sorry, wrong again. These companies employ the cram and jam method because they copy what their competition does.

Their ads are put together by people in distant cubicles who do not have the faintest idea how to create effective ads. Some ad agencies actually specialize in this kind of comic book-like advertising drivel.

Do not walk off the same cliff as the cram and jam lemmings. Tell your story straight and use as much space or time as you need to tell it effectively. Feature less and tell more. Be sure to speak to your audience in plain coffee-shop English.

Lose the bullets and features only copy. Clean up your marketing blackboard and concentrate on what is in it for me benefits) and you will start to see what is in it for you.

Why are more men employed in management positions than women?

I know there is no exact answer to this question, but I just want to know different opinions from different people.

What else, other than discrimination, could account for the under-representation of women employed in management positions?

Any input is helpful, thank you!

I think the playing field where this is concerned is actually starting even out, although I don’t have quantifiable data right now.

I do think many women want management positions, and know personally many women bosses (I have two currently, and have had many in my working career).
I will have to find my resources, but I really think we are pretty even – or at least close.

You might have often wondered why you always end up cramming in the last minute before your final examination. Your choir group is having practice on Saturday and your classmates have a group study planned at the same time.

Time management is essential for leading a successful college career. College life, as commonly known, is full of various surprises- lots of projects and homework, endless examinations, surprise tests and various other things with respect to academics.

Unlike high school, where you deal with the usual subjects each day, classes in college do not meet daily.

Here are a few tips that can help you minimize your stress while dealing with the different activities that you need to accomplish.

Tip #1 : Make a time chart
A Time chart is always recommended in time management. It helps you identify the best time for the different activities that you must do. For college students, the time management is a little trickier as they have fixed classes and free time in between.
A time chart can help give your schedule some structure based on the periods best suited for a particular activity. It also gives your schedule more balance. Certain students concentrate a bit too much on study and lose out on other activities such as sports, social events and recreation.

Tip #2 : Prioritize
One of the most important aspects of time management is prioritizing. It is difficult to decide which activity must be done first and which activity must be done later.
It is extremely important for college students to prioritize and select the activities to which they want to dedicate their time.
Incase you are unable to figure out what to prioritize, here are a few guidelines that can help you fix a schedule better.
• Reward. Find out the things that give you most joy. As you go through personal priorities, don’t forget to add personal fulfillment. There is always a satisfaction in doing something that you are good at. Do things that you know will give you positive results.
• Requirement: when your obligations get too much, stop right there and segregate your “chose to do” from your “must do.”
It is common knowledge that any college student will have obligations. You definitely do not have to take up responsibility for all obligations in the world. You need to ask yourself what are the tasks that you need to pursue.
• Results: while sorting priorities, find out those activities that give you favorable returns. Spend maximum time on those activities that require your greatest strength. Do not waste your effort and time on things that do not result in the desired outcome
College is the best period in which to experiment and try out new things. Prioritizing can help you focus on things that are important while enjoying new experiences.

Tip #3 : Do not over-commit
Exerting excessive effort on a particular activity can result in stress, pressure and burnout. Whenever you take on a particular activity in excess, you are denying yourself the opportunity of pursuing some other activity in the same time.

Tip #4 : Write down things
Writing things down is a time management technique that can help you remember the tiniest detail regarding your activities, especially during classes. Avoid the habit of memorizing. Often we forget older details when newer ones need to be remembered.

One of the challenges many teachers and parents face is keeping children on task while doing their class work or homework. Time management on small tasks, such as spelling homework or a math assignment, can be very difficult for young children. The task is repetitive and they tend to let their mind wander.

In order to help children increase time on task, use a timer. Either a digital timer, where the time counts down for them, or an old fashioned timer where they can see the dial ticking down will work.

When it is time to do the work, ask the students how long the assignment should take. Guide them to an accurate time, usually about 1 minute per question or problem is sufficient, and then set the timer. Place the timer on the table right in front of the child or at the front of the classroom so that they can see time counting down as they work.

If you’d like, tell the children that if they complete their work accurately and neatly, before the timer goes off, they can have some small reward. Free time, picking the next class activity, a sticker or having the chance to play a quick game are usually good incentives for children to stay on task.

Racing against the clock may also make the activity more enjoyable for some students who see it as a game or challenge. As long as set reasonable, achievable time limitations, you can build up the confidence of students who work at a slower pace when they “win” against the clock.

Sometimes, some students won’t finish the assignment before the timer goes off. If the child has legitimately been working hard the entire time but does not complete the assignment, it is perfectly fine to add some extra time. You should praise their efforts and adjust to the child’s actual working speed in the future.

By having the timer track the time spent on an assignment, students will become more aware of the passing of time and how long things should take. Often, the simple trick of adding a timer will take the nagging to stay on task out of class/homework time, will increase the students’ focus, and alleviate some anxiety students feel toward tests and assignments with time limitations.

Eventually children will no longer need the timer to focus on completing work because they will understand how to stay focused on their own.
