3. Topics for project management courses

Lots of topics are appropriate for project management courses, and the key is to pick something of current interest and value.  For example, training on a project management tool might include something like Microsoft Project training, someone in the information technology field might like to learn transitioning from more technical functions to project management, and yet someone else might like an IT project management course. There are many other topics, especially in the soft skills areas like leadership, management, and communication where just the right project management courses can be found to take project management skills to the next level.

4. Hit the Iron While It’s Hot!

Every time a new selling season approaches, small business owners and managers need to take inventory and spruce up marketing blips that seem to appear and reappear in their daily promotional challenges.

Marketing legend, Zig Ziglar, characterized these blips as stinking thinking (ST) and recommended a regular check up from the neck up. Good advice to follow.

Here are some of the small business mental roadblocks that may need a lube and oil change:

ST: Anyone who can fog a mirror is my designated target market. Deep six this thought once and for all. Aim your advertising at everyone and you will hit no one. Your ads will blow in the wind but you will still have to pay for them.

ST: I have been in business in these parts for XX years. Folks around here know where I am and what I sell. Get real. There is hardly a square mile of our fruited plain where 50% of the residents are not moving in, moving out or moving on. A good many in your market area do not know anymore about your business than they do about your competition.

ST: Customers are more likely to raise their hand and inquire when I leave the prices(s) out of my advertisement. Keep on walking west looking for the sun to rise!

Savvy consumers today do not take the time to play guessing games. What they will do is turn the page or the dial and you and your ad become history.

ST: My business is pretty much the same as most of my competitors. If you believe that, you and your marketing efforts are headed for some serious train wrecks. Get a grip.

Take the time necessary to clearly define what is unique and special about you or your business as opposed to your competitors. Itch your niche. State your case clearly and often: why anyone should buy your offering from you.

ST: If my ad is too specific, I am likely to miss someone who might have responded. Once again now: when you attempt to speak to everyone, you speak to no one and that is exactly who will respond to your ads.

ST: The only reason I ever advertise is to remind people that I carry a wide assortment and offer the best selection of widgets this side of Rotten Porch, Kansas.

If you are wasting your money using phrases like wide assortment or best selection, your trips to the advertising plate will result in consistently striking out. Avoid majoring in minors (meaningless words).

ST: If I list my price(s), my competitors will undercut me. Really! The only people you care about seeing or hearing your ad and taking note of your
price(s) are your target market prospects and customers. No one else matters!

ST: It seems to me that the only thing people in this market care about is price. You know why? Because almost without exception the larger advertisers (grocery chains, vehicle dealers, and big box stores) not only feature but consistently highlight price in bold type encased inside all manner of gaudy clip art. Pray that they never wake up and realize the error of their ways.

Your primary message should focus on what is in it for me (besides just price) to choose your offer over your competitors . . . today . . . or at least soon. Make that case and ad results will follow.

ST: The big boxes cram and jam lots of items and offerings in their ads. That strategy must work or they would not continue to do it. Sorry, wrong again. These companies employ the cram and jam method because they copy what their competition does.

Their ads are put together by people in distant cubicles who do not have the faintest idea how to create effective ads. Some ad agencies actually specialize in this kind of comic book-like advertising drivel.

Do not walk off the same cliff as the cram and jam lemmings. Tell your story straight and use as much space or time as you need to tell it effectively. Feature less and tell more. Be sure to speak to your audience in plain coffee-shop English.

Lose the bullets and features only copy. Clean up your marketing blackboard and concentrate on what is in it for me benefits) and you will start to see what is in it for you.

I learned about time management from the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. Now I’m the one running around yelling, “I’m late. I’m late – for a very important date”.

I remember when stores were closed on Sundays and holidays. Now we White Rabbits have stores open 24/7, one-day dry cleaning and 24-hour news stations. I don’t need appointments for manicures and haircuts. Of course, I don’t need appointments for emergency rooms or morgues either. Maybe there’s a message there.

From carpool lanes to road rage, the message when we drive is we’re in a hurry to get everywhere. We’re in a hurry to get to the next place where we’re going to have to wait.

I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say they were taking a shortcut. Now shortcuts are the only way to go. Traffic reporters tell us about alternative routes to miss the traffic we should have left earlier to miss.

I live in Los Angeles. I know traffic; but I don’t always know what causes it. Although there’s no accident, road work or merging freeways, there’s no movement. I try to think of my Starbuck’s cup as being half full. The traffic’s caused by too much of a good thing – living in Los Angles.

Cell phones let us feel we have some control over time management when we’re stuck in traffic. Cell phones compensate for having to wait until we get to our destination to make a call. Cell phones let middle-agers make calls before we forget what we want to say.

I remember when eating out was the exception – not the rule. We don’t have time to cook. We defrost and microwave. Because we have less control over what we eat, we have less control over what size clothes we wear.

I try to control time by trying to carry everything upstairs in one trip and trying to do too many errands with one quarter in the parking meter. I can hear my grandmother saying haste makes waste. She wouldn’t have understood multi-tasking – unless it meant lecturing me and my sisters at the same time.

When the phone company said I’d have to dial 1 + the area code when calling local numbers, I heard myself complaining about the extra time it would take. If Grandmother had heard me, she’d have thought a lecture about not rushing would have been good time management.

Time Management is Important – But Don’t Schedule Tasks to Time Anymore

Time Management usually involves scheduling activities to time. This however has been the straw on the camel’s back for many people.

This is one of the worst things that people attempt in time management that have only the very best of intentions wanting to get more organized and productive.

Trying to schedule activities for our time management does not last does it? There are too many distractions and changes in mood, preference, suitability, and importance of tasks and projects and responsibilities.

Then we beat ourselves up about it, feeling guilty, and become even less motivated and thus less successful and more overwhelmed than before! Yes?

Consider not scheduling your activities to time.

Top tip: It actually usually works much better to just wing it by jotting a few things down on paper you want to get done, than to try scheduling many activities/tasks to time. You will also enjoy your time more whilst being much more effective too.

So what can you do instead of scheduling activities to time and beyond just jotting down a few tasks per time?

My Localization Breakthrough

In my coaching I show clients to ‘localize’ their activities, before ‘scheduling’ them.

Doing similar activities in one place in one go, and combining activities for time management leverage.

Alternatively said: ‘keep your socks in one place!, and set up personalized cock-pits’.

Similar activities (like putting on your left sock and your right sock) should be done at one time. It’s amazing how people understand this for socks, but miss it for things like phone calls, or going through mail, or shopping.

Do similar activities together in one time management ‘mini-day’, arrange to do all the weeks shopping (including clothes, food, electrical items, presents, etc) on the same visit to the shops.

Ok, the cock-pit analogy. Well the visual is that of an airplane cock-pit, with hundreds of lights, buttons, dials, and knobs, to give the pilot efficient control and access to all he might need, even when things get a little rough.

We perhaps do not need all areas of our life arranged so intricately for effective time management, but in general, work out ways to save time, or make best use of time, by having things where you need them.

Do you have an envelope opener next to where you open your mail?
Do you have a clutter free desk draw for those things you often want access to whilst at your desk? Like headset for computer conversation, telephone, current frequently referred to books, stationery case.

Some of my clients initially feel this is pedantic. Consider that being tightly efficient with the locations and proximity of items and tools you use regularly can actually get you working on tasks nearly twice as fast. This means a massive increase in time management efficiency.

Every room should be so arranged: the bathroom should be ready for efficient use, and you could take it that much further by having speakers in there so you can listen to talking CDs to learn something whilst you shave and wash in the morning. Now that’s my kind of time management vision.

The kitchen too could have speakers. I’ve got worksheets for vocal exercises and physical exercises that I often do whilst I cook!

Personalise your environment, be aware of optimizing your time management by arranging things just how you like and want them.
