Your biggest advantage in home business could become your worst enemy as well, that is absence of boss and you need to do your own time management. For instance, you think that you have all the time in the world and you will be able to do everything under the sun within the day. Alternatively, you just relax too much and do not put enough effort, like the hare in the famous hare and tortoise story.

I have identified the major problems that takes away your time from you and then prescribed the solution. In terms of problems, the first problem is there is no Boss. After the end of the week, no one is coming to you and asking to look at the time sheets. Your mind start thinking that it can take a break as long as it wishes. The second biggest problem is lack of co-operation from Family. Your family members see you at home. They just now think you are there. You keep on getting requests like pay the bills; pick up the kid from the school and an endless list.

Third biggest problem is lack of discipline. Because you don’t have to enter office at 8:00 am, you slowly start waking up late and late from bed. As Einstein said, “The universe and human stupidity are endless”.
After identifying the problem it’s the time to overcome them and take control of your own time. The first step is goal setting. Set your yearly goals. Break them up into monthly, weekly and daily goals. You have to achieve those small goals to become successful in your home based business. Remember, every great journey starts with a single footstep. Secondly, you will have to become really your that boss. You have to be your own critique. For half an hour in the day, think you are your own boss. Look at your own work from a different perspective. Set up a reward and punishment schedule. Use Outlook express or other software. And finally communicate with Family. Make a promise that you will enter your home office at 7:00 sharp in the morning. Tell your family that you need uninterrupted time from here to say 5:00. Tell them you will be a perfect family man after this time, but if they disturb you during this time. And the fourth step is, prepare the daily routine beforehand. Before you go to bed, prepare a list of tasks you want to do. Then sleep. While sleeping your brain will think about it and next morning, you will feel pushed to complete the work. Finally take one day in a week break. Just indulge yourself with the family in exciting activities that just takes away your mind from the reality.

Need help with time management in high school.?

i’m a high school student with and c-b average its not becuase i have trouble in any of my classes
i just have such a hard time managing my time
i’m in all AP classes and i’m doing the Acedemic Decathlon Program, I’m Vice president of my class(though i dont plan to do it again next year), Business Profestionals of America Program, and I’m volunteer (i do fundraisers and donation drives for different organizations or reasons but i have to do it alone becuase its not part of any club or organization)
Yeah it may seem like alot and i have enough management skills to keep every thing up to date to an extent but i still think i can do better

I’m still a sophmore in high school
and my GPA is about 3.0 – 3.5 right now but i still have to bring it up!

i have planner and i try to write everything in it
but it seems like when i get home i just kind of lounge and relax

Do you have an action plan in your time management scheme? Last night while writing these articles, I had to check myself. The last thing I want to do is tell the readers how to manage time and be a hypocrite.

The writing of these articles is rewarding since I realized that managing your time includes using your intelligence and skills, as well as putting an action plan into play.

Action plans are lists of responsibilities that instruct a person “to carry out to achieve an objective.” The list centers on the goals immediately needing achievement on demand. The list or action plan enables you to center your attention on the specific obligations required of you.

The marketplace has several software programs that help those of us that have busy schedules and time management is a struggle. The software’s available provide tools for storing names, addresses, SS# and other important information in a secure filing cabinet. Many of the large companies are wise to invest in this type of software, since it is a source for managing time.

However if you own a smaller company, the software programs are often expensive so you might want to resort to some of the software programs that offer similar tools for organizing, such as Microsoft Outlook, to manage your time. Microsoft Outlook has book organizers, address books, and other tools sufficient enough to help smaller businesses manage their business. If you are storing files on your computer, be sure to backup your data so nothing is lost. Backups are essential for protecting important documents, and if spares you headaches if your hard drive fails, and your data is lost. If you are, storing data on discs or other storage mediums be sure to include a file name that you will remember. For example, if you are storing birth certificates or identifications in a file, name the file accordingly. This will help you stay organized, and ahead of the game.

File extensions are connecting files to a particular file. Therefore, if you have outdated files, you might want to add a few extensions and label the file accordingly. This will help you get right to the important documents, and have the piece of mind you need if the outdated documents require reopening. If you have documents, lying around or in your computer that you no longer need, make sure this is true and toss them in the garbage. Why hang on to something that you will not need again? Wasted documents take up time and space in the sense that if you are searching for a document and continue to stumble on papers you no longer need, it is a waste of time.

Most business requires maximum speed on computers. Moreover, when you are storing outdated files, your action in time management plan is out of socket. Getting ahead is organizing and tossing what is wasting space.

In larger organizations, by contrast, a great deal of collective effort might be put into the process of just turning a bolt. For example, on a manufacturing production line, a worker may need to place a panel and connect it using a couple of bolts. The action of performing this task ends up being a small fraction of the total cost of completion. Behind the task, we will likely find work studies, statistical analysis, much planning and coordination, product design scenarios, and more – all culminating in someone tightening a couple of bolts. Without the tightening of those bolts by hand, all of the upstream work is for naught. For example, managing a project is simply an umbrella over a more complex set of tasks, and the only thing that really moves the project forward is the completion of those tasks. A similar statement can be made about department management or organization management.

A more complex situation, such as building a system, or building a building, proves the point. In the end, after all the planning, meeting, discussion, and thinking, what is left is a set of tasks that, if completed on time and within budget to proper quality standards, brings about a successful project. So it is simply a collection of everybody’s task lists, alignment with the strategy, and properly prioritizing and sequencing what ties together time and task management. And, in the end, it’s all about task management.

When I tell people that I’m a Project Manager, I often get an initial “Oh….neat!” response which is usually followed by a comment that is something along the lines of “So….what exactly do you do?” Occasionally if I’m speaking with a Software Developer I may get a mild snarl, a clear sign they’ve had experience working with a poor project manager; a topic I will address in future articles.

What this tells me is that not only is there a ways to go before the practice of Project Management is understood; but even further to go before it is valued more widely than it is now. For how can something be properly valued if it isn’t truly understood?

This is of course not to say that the practice of Project Management isn’t widely appreciated in many organizations. Indeed, a large number of companies have implemented Project Management Offices, the Project Management Institute is exploding in popularity, and it certainly seems that the number of Project Management openings out-numbers the supply of Project Managers. However, it is often times larger organizations that have adopted this practice, and in an economy where just under half of the work-force is employed by small businesses there are a significant number of organizations that have never used Project Managers, and even more employees that have never worked with a Project Manager. Ironically, it is small businesses that could quickly and painlessly reap the benefits of Project Management.

So what exactly is Project Management an what does a Project Manager do? According to the Project Management Institute (PMI) “a project is a unique temporary endeavor, with a set beginning and end.” and that “More formally, PMI defines project management as ‘the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet the requirements of a particular project.’” This second part may not tell you much without diving further into the subject; but let’s focus on the former for now. In order to understand Project Management, it is critically important to understand that a project is a unique, temporary endeavor with a specific objective. Project Management is not Operations. And while a specific operational objective may be a project, and a project upon completion may be handed over to operations, the two are distinctly different.

Now that we’re clear on what a Project is, we can move onto the more formal definition quoted above. Essentially, this is saying that Project Management is the methodology used to achieve the objective of a project. Therefore, a Project Manager is someone that has the necessary “knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques” to manage a unique endeavor and ensure that it meets it’s objectives.

Even knowing all this, it still may not be clear to you what exactly a Project Manager does. A project manager is a little like the manager of a baseball team. They make sure that the objective is clear, that it is understood by everyone on the team, that all parties (stakeholders) have had input into the project, that all the required work is understood, that each team member knows what they are responsible for, ensures that risks are identified and contingency plans have been created, verifies that all work is being completed on schedule, etc, etc, etc. The list of course goes on and on. The reason I like using the analogy of the baseball manager though is because when some people hear what a Project Manager does, they feel they shouldn’t even need a project manager. They initially think that if everyone on their team did their job the project would be successfully completed even in the absence of a Project Manager. This can only be true however in the same way that a baseball team doesn’t need a manager to play a baseball game. It could be done, and they might even win some games, but they won’t win the World Series. The same is true with projects. In the absence of a Project Manager there are certainly some items that will be accomplished; it is certain however that there will be delays, cost overruns, quality will suffer, and that the end result may be quite different than what the project called for. Ultimately, Project Management matters for the same reason management matters in baseball; because whether it’s a baseball game or introducing a new product or service, winning matters.
