I’m trying to upgrade the free SP XP2…problems with task manager?

The computer says that the file is running or being used by another file. When I try to use the task manager, nothing happens. When I go through the START menu to search for the taskmgr, I find it, but when I try to open it, it flashes a message so fast that I can’t read it. I just installed a program that cleans the registry and has great virus protection. I have no idea what else to do.
