This week on the Geek Dads @ Home podcast, we regretfully announce the (hopefully temporary) departure of Scott Jangro, a mainstay of the program since the third episode. Scott’s a busy guy, which we can certainly respect, and we sincerely hope that he’ll pop in to join us whenever his schedule allows. So, like Joe says in the first minutes of this episode, “and then there were two…”. Joe and I begin by talking about our plans for taking the podcast forward by having special guests on a regular basis.

For my first post on Make and Takes, I thought I’d start with something near and dear to my heart: Productivity . Don’t get me wrong, I’m probably the worst procrastinator I know so, unfortunately, “productivity” is a topic that I’ve been forced to become very familiar with. Listed below are some of my favorite free productivity tools and tips that have helped me be a bit more productive: Remember the Milk : this simple task management tool (aka glorified to do list manager) is great at organizing your everyday tasks.

Although our likely downsize move from our present home is at least a couple of years away, I am already spending time thinking about it . This includes appreciating the many financial benefits of downsizing . One of the first and most difficult steps to take in preparing to downsize is getting rid of the extra stuff. Baby boomers have lots of it. We don’t need much of the stuff we have collected now and we surely won’t need it (and can’t fit in) into a smaller home.

Don’t let you Face Painting or Children’s Entertainment business down by not following up on each lead with a solid system. And don’t be one of those business owners who receive a call from an interested customer, deal with the enquiry and never do anymore than that!   This is where you can excel above the competition with an outstanding sales process behind you. It’s wise to remember that peoples’ buying decisions differ vastly and it could take a number of contacts between you and the prospective customer to secure the booking for a party or event.

A few months ago, my ex-mother-in-law gave me her old Kindle when she upgraded to the new model. The first book I downloaded on it was last year’s Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, The Short, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz. I enjoyed the book tremendously, and had a life-altering experience while reading it on the Metro-North train and in downtown Starbucks. No one noticed what I was reading . This was incredibly disorienting.

The mind is disorganised and that’s just the way it works. Brains are not designed to create order in your life. They need some help. How many of these statements apply to you? You think about something that needs doing, then forgot about it a few minutes later. You put small objects down in the house such as car keys or glasses and cannot find them a few hours later You are introduced to someone and then forget what their name is You say yes to lots of things and find that the day is
